  • ASIN: Book Description Four time Hugo Award winner Vernor Vinge has taken readers to the depths of space and into the far future in his bestselling novels A Fire Upon the Deep and A Deepness in the Sky. Now, he has written a science-fiction thriller set in a place and time as exciting and strange as any far-future world: San Diego, California, 2025.
With knowledge comes risk. When Robert begins to re-train at Fairmont High, learning with other older people what is second nature to Miri and other teens at school, he unwittingly becomes part of a wide-ranging conspiracy to use technology as a tool for world domination.
As Robert becomes more deeply involved in conspiracy, he is shocked to learn of a radical change planned for the UCSD Geisel Library; all the books there, and worldwide, would cease to physically exist. He and his fellow re-trainees feel compelled to join protests against the change. With forces around the world converging on San Diego, both the conspiracy and the protest climax in a spectacular moment as unique and satisfying as it is unexpected. This is science fiction at its very best, by a master storyteller at his peak.

    A Fire Upon The Deep
Reviewed July 2003 I first read this book in 1993, shortly after it came out, and ten years later I still think it's one of the greatest SF novels ever written, blending high-concept cool ideas with character and a tense and engaging plot. It's not to be missed. In this universe, the Milky Way galaxy is divided into three "zones of thought": The Unthinking Depths, the Slow Zone, and the Beyond, with the Transcend being the region outside the galaxy. The further you get from the center, the higher a level of intelligence and technology you can attain, and the higher speeds you can reach. Earth is in the Slow Zone, limited to lightspeed travel and moderate technology. Thousands of years in the future, however, humanity has reached the Beyond and has become one of the community of races inhabiting the outer shell. One human colony, however, while performing research in the Transcend, releases an ancient and evil superpower, which promptly begins to take over whole planets throughout the Beyond. However, one group of colonists escapes in a small ship with cryogenically frozen children to a world near the Slow Zone. This world is inhabited by pack-mind creatures dubbed the Tines, and their first encounter results in two dead humans, dozens of dead Tines, and the children, Johanna and Jefri, captured by opposite sides in an ongoing conflict among Tine nations. Meanwhile, forces elsewhere in the Beyond are justifiably disturbed by the Perversion the humans have released. A few reason that the ship on the Tines' world may contain some countermeasure to the evil power. As a result, a human librarian named Ravna, a reconstituted Slow Zone man named Pham Nuwen, and two Skroderiders - artificially mobile plants - embark on a journey to the Tines' world to find the ship. Meanwhile, the rest of the Beyond reacts variously to the Perversion: Trying to act against it directly, blaming the humans and trying to organize races to wipe them out, and considering it not really their problem, while the Perversion continues to expand its sphere of influence.

Havarti for free speech New! Vinge's annotated version of his Singularity talk . NEW! Talk by Vinge on What if the Singularity does NOT happen? I consider Vernor Vinge to be one of the most visionary SF authors living today (it could be claimed this directly makes him one of the most visionary living authors, period, but I won't get into that.) His vision of technology is quite different from most SF, and on the surface seems quite fantastic, yet in fact feels the most realistic to me. His books have placed him in the extropian literary pantheon. Technology in much of SF is simply an effector of the vision of the work. FTL, anti-gravity, artificial gravity, all working to build interstellar empires regardless of the physical obstacles. Social changes are often minimal. Vernor Vinge is at the other extreme; in looking at the potential of realistic technology, particularly computers/AI or cognitive science, he has come to the conclusion that we must run into a Singularity beyond which meaningful prediction (and fiction) is impossible. Idealized nanotechnology also has potential for creating a singularity, although not as drastic as the one causable by control over the nature of intelligence. Much of his fiction is based on skirting around the Singularity and is quite interesting thereby. It is also well written.

    17. Vernor Vinge: A Deepness In The Sky - An Infinity Plus Review
Infinity Plus Review of the novel set in the same universe as the author s Hugo Award-winning A Fire Upon the Deep .
    http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/nonfiction/deepness.htm
A Deepness in the Sky by Vernor Vinge To appropriate a memorable image from his Hugo Award winning A Fire Upon the Deep (1992), Vernor Vinge has in A Deepness in the Sky written an epic about flies trapped in amber. The amber is physics and history; the flies are individuals and the civilizations of which they are part; and some of the flies are seeking to escape their imprisonment. Their struggle, hampered by inherent conservatism, by moral blindness, and by the obduracy of Nature, is the substance of one of the best constructed and most absorbing space operas of the decade. Any reader familiar with A Fire Upon the Deep will soon come to realise the predicament of the humans and Spiders who populate Vinge's centuries-long story. Unknown to them (and to anyone who uninitiatedly reads A Deepness in the Sky ), these beings dwell in a region of the Galaxy known to higher cultures as the Slow Zone, intermediate between the Unthinking Depths (the galactic Core), where intelligence and higher technology cannot exist, and the Beyond (the galactic periphery), where barriers such as the speed of light can readily be transcended. The Slow Zone permits rational thought, the rise of information societies, and slower-than-light space travel; but once those have been achieved, no further progress is possible. Ingenuity and enterprise cannot get around this simple fact. Civilizations and individuals strike a ceiling, and fall down into despair and disintegration; by the time

    Description
A Fire Upon the Deep is the big, breakout book that fulfills the promise of Vinge's career to date: a gripping tale of galactic war told on a cosmic scale. Thousands of years hence, many races inhabit a universe where a mind's potential is determined by its location in space, from superintelligent entities in the Transcend, to the limited minds of the Unthinking Depths, where only simple creatures and technology can function. Nobody knows what strange force partitioned space into these "regions of thought," but when the warring Straumli realm use an ancient Transcendent artifact as a weapon, they unwittingly unleash an awesome power that destroys thousands of worlds and enslaves all natural and artificial intelligence. Fleeing the threat, a family of scientists, including two children, are taken captive by the Tines, an alien race with a harsh medieval culture, and used as pawns in a ruthless power struggle. A rescue mission, not entirely composed of humans, must rescue the children-and a secret that may save the rest of interstellar civilization.

Two human groups: The Qeng Ho, a culture of free, innovative traders, and the Emergents, a ruthless society based on the technological enslavement of minds. The group that opens trade with the aliens will reap unimaginable riches. But first, both groups must wait at the aliens' very doorstep for their strange star to relight and for the alien planet to reawaken, as it does every two hundred and fifty years...
