VIRGIL (PUBLIUS VERGILIUS MARO), the great Roman poet, was born on the 15th of October in the year 70 B.C., on a farm on the banks of the Mincio, in the district of Andes , not far from the town of Mantua . In the region north of the Po a race of more imaginative susceptibility than the people of Latium formed part of the Latin -speaking population. It was favourable to his development as a national poet that he was born and educated during the interval of comparative calm between the first and second civil wars, and that he belonged to a generation which, as the result of the social war, first enjoyed the sense of an Italian nationality . Yet it was only after Virgil had grown to manhood that the province to which he belonged obtained the full rights of Roman citizenship. It is remarkable that the two poets whose imagination seems to have been most powerfully possessed by the spell of Rome - Ennius and Virgil - were born outside the pale of Roman citizenship. The scenery familiar to his childhood, which he recalls with affection both in the Eclogues and the Georgics

Bust of Julius Caesar Best known for his epic poem, The Aeneid, Virgil (70 19 BC) was regarded by Romans as a national treasure.
His work reflects the relief he felt as civil war ended and the rule of Augustus began.
Rural upbringing
Born a peasant, Virgil was raised on a farm before being educated in the Greek and Roman authors. His rural upbringing influenced all his poetry, especially his earlier work, like the Eclogues.
As he was growing up, Rome was in crisis, with power-hungry nobles fighting between themselves. When he was 20 years old, Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon and began the series of bloody civil wars that would last, on and off, for another 20 years.
Civil war
Virgil hated the instability. The wars affected everyone, even simple farmers. Forced to fight, their farms fell into neglect and ruin. In the Georgics, he mourned the ruined countryside. The poems capture the timeless peacefulness of country life that he desperately wanted to see again.
Although he never married, played no part in public life and lived for years as a near recluse, his poetry won him fame and the friendship of important political players. By the time the Georgics were published, he was a member of the Roman elite.

Life of Virgil
tr. David Wilson-Okamura (1996; rev. 2005, 2008)
About the author. Aelius Donatus ( fl. 350) was a teacher of grammar and rhetoric. In the middle ages, he was probably best known as the author of a standard textbook; by the fourteenth century, his name had become a synonym for "grammar." With the exception of some fragments preserved in Servius, the vita translated below is all that survives of Donatus' commentary on the poems of Virgilnot to be confused with the Interpretationes attributed to Tiberius Claudius Donatus ( fl
About the Life of Virgil A commentary on Virgil's poetry follows the Life proper, but breaks off after the Eclogues . Most of the biographical material is generally thought to derive from a lost vita by Suetonius. Donatus in turn became the main source for later biographers, some of whom returned the favor by filling out the text of his Life with interpolations of various kinds.
About the translation. I have based this translation on the text edited by Jacob Brummer, with major interpolations from Bodleian MS. can. lat. 61 ("sigma" in Brummer's apparatus) marked here by angle brackets, and given in grey.

Publius Vergilius Maro, known in English as Virgil or Vergil, was born on October 15, 70 B.C.E. in the farming village of Andes, near Mantua, in northern Italy. Not considered citizens of Rome until 49 B.C.E., when Julius Caesar expanded citizenship to include men living north of the Po River, Virgil and his father were nearly displaced from their land after Caesar's assasination in 44 B.C.E., when Octavian, Caesar's adopted son and sole heir, confiscated much of the land in the territory in order to reward army veterans. Influenced by the greek poet Theocritus, Virgil composed his first major work, the Eclogues (also called the Bucolics ), using Homeric hexameter lines to explore pastoral rather than epic themes. The poem reflected the sorrows of the times, and exhibited rhythmic control and elegance superior to that of Virgil's successors. Published in 39 to 38 B.C.E., the Eclogues were an immediate success, and received the attention of Asinius Pollio, who introduced the poet to Octavian and secured for him an education in Milan, Rome, and Naples.

Quiet Mantua was on the richest part of the plain, in one of the wriggles of the river Mincio (Mincius), which runs down from Lake Garda to join greater rivers, dove il Po discende per aver pace con seguaci sui : where the Po runs down / Among his followers to find his peace. On the southernmost tip of the vast Lake Garda lies Sirmio where Catullus lived, though the impressive ruins still to be seen there are those of a grander and later building, probably an imperial palace. Not far east of Sirmio lies Verona (whose name is Celtic) which Catullus calls his town, but it appears to have been a dull place. Mantua was never huge and is now all but encircled by small lakes full of fish. Beyond Mantua in the plain of the Po Virgil was born in a village called Andes. No one knows now where that was, though tradition puts it at Pietole (to the south-south-east), which Napoleon visited at midnight as a young officer, in awe of Virgil. The poet was named Publius Vergilius Maro the English spelling Virgil is traditional. His middle name is not uncommon and his last name is Greek or Etruscan; his first is a mere Roman formality like `Quintus' Horatius Flaccus and `Marcus' Tullius Cicero (106 - 43 BC). He was a middle-class child and a Roman citizen by birth. His mother's and his father's family held office as magistrates in Rome. Virgil's father may even have been an eques Romanus

70-19 BC Publius Vergilius Maro (October 15, 70 BC - September 21, 19 BC), later called Virgilius, and known in English as Virgil or Vergil, was a classical Roman poet, the author of the Eclogues, the Georgics and the substantially completed Aeneid, the last being an epic poem of twelve books that became the Roman Empire's national epic. A fictional depiction of Virgil was Dante Alighieri's guide through hell and purgatory in Dante's epic poem The Divine Comedy. Virgil was born in the village of Andes, near Mantua in Cisalpine Gaul (Gaul south of the Alps; present-day northern Italy). Virgil was of non-Roman Italian ancestry, which he alluded to and defended in the Aeneid when he said that Rome will be of mixed blood. Virgil received his earliest education at five years old. He later went to Rome to study rhetoric, medicine, and astronomy, which he soon abandoned for philosophy. In this period, while Virgil was in the school of Siro the Epicurean, he began writing poetry. In 19 BC Virgil set out on a trip to Greece and Asia with the intention of revising his masterpiece, the Aeneid, already substantially completed, and then of devoting the remainder of his life to philosophical study. A group of minor poems attributed to the youthful Virgil survive, but are largely considered spurious. One, the Catalepton, consists of fourteen short poems, some of which may be Virgil's, and another, a short narrative poem titled the Culex (the mosquito), was attributed to Virgil as early as the 1st century AD. These dubious poems are sometimes referred to as the Appendix Vergiliana.

A 5th century portrait of Virgil from the Vergilius Romanus. Publius Vergilius Maro (October 15, 70 B.C.E. B.C.E. ), known in English as Virgil or Vergil , is a Latin poet, the author of the Eclogues , the Georgics and the Aeneid , the latter an epic poem of twelve books that became the Roman Empire 's national epic. Virgil, along with his predecessor Homer and his successor Dante , would form the three main pillars of epic poetry . His Aeneid is still one of the most widely influential poems ever written. Little is known of Virgil's life or beliefs, but in his poetry he shines as a brilliant master of dactylic hexameter, a verse form first used by the ancient Greeks which would fall almost entirely into disuse with Virgil's death and the gradual decline of the Roman Empire. It is largely thanks to Virgil that, in a time when knowledge of Greek was rapidly eroding, much of Greece's culture was able to find its way into the literature of early modern Europe.

Some can fiddle..... America, your republic is being systematically and purposefully destroyed from within. You chose to fiddle or burn the Quran while the republic is under attack from without and from within. You are fighting a two front war. On one front you face the totalitarian left and on the other you face their useful idiots, Islam, who serve as the foot soldiers or surrogate force of the same totalitarian left. If you burn the Quran the modern day Bolsheviks will continue to occupy and disrupt your OODA Loop and more importantly you will be delivering them yet another victory within the moral domain of this war. Can ANYONE tell me how this issue serves the purpose of restoring the republic? Can you? This is a trivial act of defiance at best and serves little utility other than to provide fodder to the totalitarian left and their allied forces. America, the apparatchiks are hopeful that you will continue to aid them in their struggle to destroy western civilization. The new Bolsheviks are masters of revolution and you must not underestimate them. Revolution is the only area in which they excel though make no mistake in this realm they are extremely proficient. Islam provides a useful distraction though you must understand Islam is no more than the tool of the totalitarian leftists seeking to destroy the republic.
