Introduction
Marcus Vitruvius Pollio (active around 25 BCE) wrote ten books on architecture. Other that what can be deduced from these books, very little is known of his life. He lived at some time between the death of Julius Caesar and the battle of Actium, probably in the reign of Augustus. The dedication of his books indicates that Augustus was the patron of Vitruvius, so that the books were probably presented in about 25 BCE. From the text one can gather that Vitruvius was a creative person with wide-ranging interests. He clearly took pride in architecture as serving the needs of man and as providing an important expression of human endeavor. Vitruvius aims to demonstrate the excellence of the science that he possesses. He notes that a s in other arts, an architect must constantly keep in view the intention of the work and the material used to express that intention. He must also be versed in history, law, moral philosophy and physics. Vitruvius presents architecture as a thoroughly humanistic art

From LoveToKnow 1911
VITRUVIUS (MARCUS VITRUVIUS POLLIO ), Roman architect and engineer, author of a celebrated work on architecture . Nothing is known concerning him except what can be gathered from his own writings. Owing to the discovery of inscriptions relating to the Gens Vitruvia at Formiae in Campania (Mola di Gaeta ), it has been suggested that he was a native of that city, and he has been less reasonably connected with Verona on the strength of an existing arch of the 3rd century, which is inscribed with the name of a later architect of the same family name "Lucius Vitruvius Cerdo, a freedman of Lucius." From Vitruvius himself we learn that he was appointed, in the reign of Augustus, together with three others, a superintendent of balistae and other military engines, a post which, he says, he owed to the friendly influence of the emperor's sister, probably Octavia De Architectura, i. pref.). In another passage (v. I) he describes a basilica and adjacent aedes Augusti, of which he was, the architect. From viii. 3 it has been supposed that he had served in Africa in the time of Julius Caesar, probably as a military engineer, but the words hardly

Outline: Introduction Vitruvius Ad Quadratum The Sacred Cut ... Reading Introduction We leave ancient Greece now and move forward a few centuries to Rome. We'll start with a brief look at the architect Vitruvius, whose words echo down through the centuries. When we discussed the polygons we looked at the triangle, pentagon, and hexagon, leaving the square and rectangle for this unit. We'll see here that the square and its diagonal, the so called ad quadratum , played a central role in Roman architecture.

Idea
Among the ancients, according to Columella , Vitruvius, and Pliny, the word rubrica rubric, signified the red earth used by carpenters to mark on wood the line to follow in cutting it; according to Juvenal the same name was applied to the red titles under which the jurisconsults arranged the announcements of laws . Soon the red colour, at first used exclusively for writing the titles, passed to the indications or remarks made on a given text. This custom was adopted in liturgical collections prayers the instructions and indications which should regulate their recitation, so that the word rubric has become the consecrated term for the rules concerning Divine service or the administration of the sacraments Gavanti said that the word appeared for the first time in this sense in the Roman Breviary printed at Venice in 1550, but it is found in manuscripts , of the fourteenth century, such as 4397 of the Vatican Library, fol. 227-28; see also the fifteenth-century "Ordo Romanus" of Peter Amelius . The word is used sometimes to indicate the general laws sometimes to mark a particular indication, but always to furnish an explanation of the use of the text, hence the saying: "Lege rubrum si vis intelligere
