Marks Ralph Manheim Country France Language French Publication date Journey to the End of Night Voyage au bout de la nuit , 1932) is the first novel of Louis-Ferdinand Céline . This semi-autobiographical work describes antihero Ferdinand Bardamu His surname, Bardamu, is derived from the French words barda —the "pack" carried by World War I soldiers—and mu , the past participle of the verb mouvoir , meaning "to move". Bardamu is involved with World War I , colonial Africa , and post-World War I America (where he works for the Ford Motor Company ), returning in the second half of the work to France , where he becomes a medical doctor and establishes a practice in a poor Paris suburb, the fictional La Garenne-Rancy. The novel also satirizes the medical profession and the vocation of scientific research . The disparate elements of the work are linked together by recurrent encounters with Léon Robinson, a hapless character whose experiences parallel, to some extent, those of Bardamu.

SUBJECT INTERPRETATION Note: This column offers insights into other literary forms that often resemble or share attributes with magical realism. The goal of this column is to highlight shifting notions and biases about cutting edge literature. Q What is Slipstream? Here are a few definitions culled from the Internet: Christopher Priest, columnist : "It is the literature of strangeness, but not necessarily in its subjects. Slipstream is about attitude, or a different way of inquiring into the familiar. It includes rather than categorises while not being magic realism, or fantasy, or science fiction, slipstream literature includes many examples of these." *Bruce Sterling, literary critic : "It is a contemporary kind of writing which has set its face against consensus reality. It is fantastic, surreal sometimes, speculative on occasion, but not rigorously so. It does not aim to provoke a sense of wonder or to systematically extrapolate in the manner of classic science fiction. Instead, this is a kind of writing that simply makes you feel very strange; the way that living in the late twentieth century makes you feel, if you are a person of a certain sensibility. We could call this kind of fiction Novels of Postmodern Sensibility, but that looks pretty bad on a category rack, and requires an acronym besides; so for the sake of convenience and argument, we will call these books slipstream. " Ted White, SF fan

His second question to a coroner clarifies what he means by a “good death”.  “Do most people suffer when they die?”  This question is the one you would keep in your heart long after a burial or cremation.  Damn it! Did it have to be that way? We feel powerless to deal with the physical humiliation that death brings.  We feel humiliated for our loved one’s suffering. And this brings anger. As a Buddhist one is taught to investigate the cause of one’s anger through meditation and non-judgemental reflection.  This is what gets one closer to the root of your anger.  However, not all religious disciplines emphasize this type of reflection. Padre Quintin Lopez Cessa, a Catholic priest in Mexico answers that a good death is to live well.  This is in my viewpoint, a logical fallacy. If a good life purchases an easy death, it does not explain why so many suffer at death’s door.  However, it is an idea expanded further by another Catholic.  An aging lady in the town of Xico mentions, “If you don’t owe anybody anything, then you’ll die in your sleep.” To Padre Cessa’s credit, however, he does admit that suffering is difficult to understand. None of these approaches get closer to what Vollman is actually looking for, a guaranteed mechanism for a painless death. The crux of the entire discussion is whether suffering can be separated from death in a morally safe way.  His answer is assisted suicide.  In the article, the Zen chaplain Jennifer Block explains that from the
