Weldon was born Franklin Birkinshaw in Alvechurch Worcestershire , England to a literary family, with both her maternal grandfather, Edgar Jepson (1863–1938), and her mother Margaret writing novels (the latter under the nom de plume Pearl Bellairs , alter-ego of the eponymous character in Aldous Huxley 's short story, "Farcical History of Richard Greenow"). Fay Weldon BIO Back to top. ARTICLE For over thirty years, Fay Weldon has been chronicling the adventures of women - most of them damaged by men in some way - with spunk and style. Weldon's characters don't give in, they fight back with spectacular schemes that leave their would-be oppressors sputtering. Who can forget Ruth, the heroine of LIFE AND LOVES OF A SHE DEVIL, wreaking havoc on the lives of her ex-husband and his new wife? Or the amazing Alexandra Ludd, who discovers her marriage was a sham and sets out to right some serious wrongs in WORST FEARS? And in TROUBLE, when Spicer says to his wife, "The important thing for you, Annette, is not to think too much. Just accept," sparks fly. Faye Weldon grew up in New Zealand with her mother, sister, and grandmother. She has said that she "grew up believing the world was peopled by females." Perhaps it was this experience that gives her such insight into the war between the sexes. In addition to writing twenty novels, Weldon is also the author of a number of short story collections. Her most recent collection, WICKED WOMEN, is one of her best. Separate sections entitled "Tales of Wicked Women," "Tales of Wicked Men," and "Tales of Wicked Children," chronicle the ups and downs of modern family life.

I bought the book because I'm a raging foodie and love to read about food when I'm not actually cooking, eating or browsing at my local butcher shop (hey, some people collect stamps. Oops, I do that too, never mind.) I feel like good food can contain all of the best parts of life, love, sex, laughter, luck, joy, awe, and fun. Sorry, I'm just waxing rhapsodic (and a gold star sticker to whoever can gues what movie that line is from).
This book is about Esther (one of my favourite female Biblical names by the way. Weldon's Esther has nothing else in common with Queen Esther). Her husband has an affair with his secretary who then leaves him for his son. Esther's response is to retire to a dirty basement studio and start eating, watching television and reading science fiction novels. I'm not knocking the dive into food and books, I've been known to go on the occasional Harlequin romance/potato chip bender myself but her determination to stay there drove me absolutely up the wall. It's just, in my world, the occasional culinary disaster just helps you to appreciate the (also occasional) culinary triumph. In Esther's world, it's an excuse to live on canned soup and frozen fish sticks.

Summary:
Liffley always dreamt of living in a country cottage. When she visited Honeycomb cottage in Somerset she new she wanted to live there. Richard, her husband, did not feel the same way. They had an apartment in London were he also worked, he was happy there. Richard wanted to have children, liffley, did not. They made a deal, if Richard agreed on moving from London to Honeycomb City, she would have his baby. Richard still was not enthusiastic about moving to the country. He was more of a city person; he liked to have people around him. He realized he had to travel to London every day to get to work. The apartment was an other issue. Liffley made the proposal some friend of hers, Mory and Helen, would move in their apartment. The traveling should not take to long, because the train station was not to far by car. Whether Richard still was not too enthusiastic, he agreed. Liffley and Richard would move to Honeycomb Cottage.
In January, they finally moved to the country. Liffley was exited. She was of the pill now, but still not pregnant. Honeycomb Cottage, in January, was colder than she expected. The rooms were smaller, but Liffley was happy, brave and positive.

About the Author
Jane Austen's life is striking for the contrast between the great works she wrote in secret and the outward appearance of being quite dull and ordinary. Austen was born in the small English town of Steventon in Hampshire, and educated at home by her clergyman father. She was deeply devoted to her family. For a short time, the Austens lived in the resort city of Bath, but when her father died, they returned to Steventon, where Austen lived until her death at the age of 41. Austen was drawn to literature early, she began writing novels that satirized both the writers and the manners of the 1790's. Her sharp sense of humor and keen eye for the ridiculous in human behavior gave her works lasting appeal. She is at her best in such books as Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1816), in which she... The Life and Loves of a She-Devil
