Something Wicked in the Air (Caroline Rhodes Mysteries)
Mary V. Welk
Manufacturer: Kleworks Publishing Company
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: Book Description The discovery of a rune stone on the campus of Bruck University threatens to disrupt the school's annual Renaissance Faire, the Festival of Knights. When the eccentric Professor Andrew Littlewort attempts to prove the stone is a genuine Viking relic, he stirs up a hornet's nest that leads to murder. Caroline Rhodes, RN, and Professor of History Carl Atwater track a killer without a conscience in the little town of Rhineburg, Illinois. Customer Reviews: Something Wonderful Something Wicked in the Air is a wonderful and worthy successor to A Deadly Little Christmas. Nurse Caroline Rhodes is persuaded (or should that be railroaded?) to help investigate the death of Rhineburg's long-serving post-mistress. She calls on her good friend, Professor Carl Atwater of Bruck University, for assistance. Suspects are thick on the ground, including the obsessed and wonderfully named Professor Littlewort, taciturn gardener Charlie Branch, and handsome bad boy student Sid Burke. Throw in some of the colourful Rhineburg residents, especially the lovely ladies of the Rhineburg Boarding House and Home for Gentle Women, and mad Madeline, the Police Chief's wife, and you have a recipe for murder, mayhem and mirth. All this is set against Rhineburg's annual Renaissance Faire, the Festival of Knights, a medieval extravaganza that is so wonderfully described you want to join in the jousting and carousing. At any rate, I could almost smell that barbecue.

Mary Lou Metzger
Although Mary Lou is best known as the girl who danced with Lawrence Welk at the end of his weekly television show, she is no stranger to other aspects of the entertainment industry. Throughout the years, Mary Lou has made countless personal appearances at theatres, conventions, state and county fairs, telethons, and festivals in both the United States and Canada in addition to doing television commercials, industrial films, and her first love, theatre. In 1990 she realized a dream when she and a group of friends founded Actors Conservatory Ensemble (ACE), a non-profit, award-winning, producing theatre company located in Los Angeles. In August of 1999 she spearheaded the addition of a children's theatre wing to ACE with the successful production of "Androcles and the Lion" featuring clowns from the Ringling Brothers Circus. From 1988 through 1999 she appeared at Universal Studios Hollywood with "Double Date", an a capella vocal group she co-founded. For 11 years they sang all the classic Doo-Wop music from the 50's and 60's. A big thrill came when they appeared as the Carolers in the Disney film "The Other Sister," directed by Garry Marshall.

About Lawrence Welk
During the early 60s there was always a Welk album in the bestsellers. Also in 1961 he signed a lifetime contract with the Hollywood Palladium and a decade later was still on television, by now syndicated across the North American continent. The band's musical policy, which stood it in such good stead for so many years, had a central core of European music, including waltzes, seasoned with numerous ballads. Although the band's book occasionally hinted that Welk was aware of other forms of music, even jazz, the bland arrangements he used watered down the original so much that it sounded barely any different from the wallpaper music he usually played. The astonishing longevity of the band's popular appeal suggests that, however cynical musicians and critics might have been about him, Welk clearly had his finger much closer to the silent majority's pulse than almost any other bandleader in history. He died of pneumonia at his home in 1992.

Book Reviews by Carl Brookins
The Bone Chamber
by Robin Burcell
ISBN 9781590583753
HC from Poisoned Pen Press
2009, 378 pages
Feisty independent-minded FBI forensic artist Sydney Fitzpatrick is off again. This time she bouncing between Washington, DC, San Francisco and various Italian locations. All the while she and her cohorts dodge international hit men. Burcell is a good writer and her varied law enforcement background gives her writing a level of authority lacking in some crime fiction.
The novel is a wide-ranging tale of intrigue, sanctioned and unsanctioned black ops, the CIA the FBI, and several other sometimes questionable agencies. Here are active old and new world mafia figures, the Knights Templar, and several world overnments. The story dredges up long standing rumors, beliefs based on very sketchy and tenuous evidence, ancient legends and involves some vast and secretive organizations such as the Vatican, Freemasonry and maybe some left-over bits of the Tri-Lateral Commission.
Conspiracies within governments, especially those involving questionable banking institutions and practices are fruitful and always interesting. That is especially the case when the venal actions of important institutions from the distant past are held up to the unblinking gaze of modern research. This novel has 'em all. And that's part of the attraction of the book. Burcell has linked in an essentially fanciful way, an incredible chain of real events that reach back to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and possible implications in the modern era. The novel proves that murder, corruption and cynical manipulation with the goal of great power and wealth are not the province of our times.
