May 2nd, 2010 No comments This is the back patio, just behind the pool. When I bought the house in 2006, these queen palms were hardly shoulder height, and the dwarf palms were thin little things hardly a foot tall. Now the palms are 2-3x taller and the dwarf palms are so lush you can hardly see the terrace anymore. seven believe how much nicer this is than concrete. bam ! I see the start of at least 10 oranges. Cycad, lavender, and a monster rosemary bush. In the back, the pineapple sage and a pine tree that I discovered in the terrace out back a few years ago. H. G. Wells (1866-1946) , English author, futurist, essayist, historian, socialist, and teacher wrote The War of the Worlds Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. And early in the twentieth century came the great disillusionment.Ch. 1. The invasion of earth by aliens from Mars, tripods attacking with Heat Rays and Black Smoke and the evacuation of London while people were terrorised in the surrounding countryside became one of the first internationally read modern science fiction stories. Wells is often credited, along with Hugo Gernsback (1884-1967) and Jules Verne (1828-1905) as being one of the fathers of science fiction. Forty years after its publication, on the night of Halloween 1938, Orson Welles Mercury Theatre on-air radio broadcast of the novel caused widespread panic in New York City. Wells masterpiece spawned more invasion literature and inspired numerous movie adaptations and print sequels.

Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) was a writer ahead of his time. The War of the Worlds was inspired by an Italian astronomer who wrote of the "canali" he saw on Mars in 1894. The word was mistranslated as "'canals," suggesting manmade structures on the red planet. Wells combined his pessimism about human nature with uncanny prescience pre·science

Timeline H.G. Wells was born on September 21, 1866 in Bromley, Kent. Joseph Wells had an accident that left him with a fractured thigh. The accident effectively put an end to Joseph`s career as a cricketer and his earnings as a shopkeeper were not enough to compensate for the loss forcing him to apprentice his sons. Approx 1880 Wells was apprenticed like his brothers to a draper, spending the years between 1880 and 1883 in Windsor and Southsea Wells became a teacher-pupil at Midhurst Grammar School Wells settled in London, married his cousin Isabel and continued his career as a teacher in a correspondence college. As a novelist Wells made his debut with The Time Machine , a parody of English class division and a satirical warning that human progress is not inevitable Wells left Isabel for one of his brightest students, Amy Catherine -whom he married. H(erbert) G(eorge) Wells (1866-1946) English novelist, journalist, sociologist, and historian, whose science fiction stories have been filmed many times. H.G. Wells's best known works are THE TIME MACHINE (1895), one of the first modern science fiction stories, THE INVISIBLE MAN (1897), and THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1898). Wells wrote over a hundred of books, about fifty of them novels. "No one would have believed, in the last years of the nineteenth century, that human affairs were being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their affairs they were scrutinized and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinize the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water." (from War of the Worlds Along with George Orwell 's Nineteen-Eighty-Four and Aldous Huxley 's Brave New World , which was a pessimistic answer to scientific optimism, Wells's novels are among the classics of science-fiction. Later Wells's romantic and enthusiastic conception of technology turned more doubtful. His bitter side is seen early in the novel BOON (1915), which was a parody of
