Irvine Welsh: Ecstasy: Three Chemical Romances
Chris Mitchell With the phenomenal success of Trainspotting (in all its various literary, filmic and dramatic guises), Irvine Welsh has moved from semi-literary obscurity to the centre of contemporary English writing. Trainspotting was one of those books that provoked people who hated reading to devour its three-hundred plus pages. This never happened with Martin Amis. But the real reason for Trainspotting's popularity was lost amongst the inevitable, tedious furore about whether or not it glamorised drug-taking. The title of Welsh's new book seems to play on that uproar - it's so obvious that it's got to mean something else. All of Welsh's work, from Trainspotting to the new collection of stories in Ecstasy

Description
Never-collected tales, including outrageous early stories from the Trainspotting years, plus a raucous new novella. Reheated Cabbage gathers stories showcasing Irvine Welsh’s trademark skills: vaulting imagination, brilliant vernacular ear, scabrous humor, and the ability to create some of the most memorable characters in contemporary fiction. You can enjoy Christmas dinner with Begbie at his Ma’s and see how he greets his sister’s boyfriend and news of their engagement. You’ll discover in “The Rosewell Incident” why aliens speak hardcore Scots English and plan to put Midlothian roughs in charge of the planet. And you’ll be delighted to welcome back “Juice” Terry Lawson and now internationally famous DJ Carl Ewart, and watch them as they meet an old nemesis, retired schoolmaster Albert Black, under the strobe lights of a Miami Beach nightclub. These stories, most first published in small magazines and out-of-print anthologies, are all wildly offbeat and will delight both fans of and newcomers to Welsh’s world.

Dr Willy Maley applauds the theatrical assault of Irvine Welsh's stage play You'll Have Had Your Hole Brecht once remarked that he'd like to see the kind of people who attended football matches at his plays. Scotland has not had a particularly distinguished record in the field of football, but in recent years, blessed with writers who can play in any position, it has begun to enjoy success on another stage. The country has gone from Celtic fringe to cultish frontier. Where it hitherto proved fertile ground for English and European theatre, Scotland is now growing its own, and exporting it too. One of the advantages of being a colonized culture is that you can break more easily with established forms and norms. Suburban sermons yielded to urban hymns, as mainstream political themes gave way to a slipstream of more subtle and nuanced engagements with politics and culture. Where John McGrath used folk forms like the ceilidh as a sounding-board, Welsh's touchstone is the rave culture he knows so well. This new Scottish drama is arguably less a breach with previous political theatre than a fruitful branching out, but it would be wrong to ignore fundamental shifts of emphasis. Welsh's characters are not the educated, respectable, law-abiding working class figures found in much traditional fiction and drama, nor are his communities unified in their opposition to some faceless authority.

TAXI FOR WELSH; Irvine says Renton's as good as movie's Travis.
Byline: RICK FULTON Exclusive
TRAINSPOTTING writer Irvine Welsh claims his film's main character, Ewan McGregor's Renton, is every bit as powerful as Robert De Niro's Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver taxi driver n taxista m/f
taxi driver taxi n chauffeur m de taxi
taxi driver taxi n
The Scots author reckons that one of the reasons the movie was such a hit is because junkie junkie Renton is a modern-day anti-hero people can relate to.
And he says his creation - and Ewan McGregor's portrayal of him - is a match for Bickle, whom De Niro immortalised in 1976 film with the line: "You talkin' to me?".
The acclaimed Scots movie will be released uncut and with nine deleted scenes on a new DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

Currently quite alive. Scotland. Works written in English and Scottish dialect.
Genres
LITERATURE Straddling the popular and the fine.
Scotland is a land I don't really understand. They still say "hame" instead of "home" over there, when the rest of the English-speaking world left that behind in the 1500s, I believe. What's going on? Is it because of that dinosaur in the lake? Are they truly prehistoric people? And what about those goofy beanie hats?
Apparently, some parts of Scotland have caught up with the present day, even if the dialect has not. So says Irvine Welsh, author of his watershed Trainspotting , and many books since that are as filthy as that. In it he demonstrates that indeed the prehistoric Scots, or at least, those located within the city, enjoy heroin as much as the rest of us do, even if their version of it sounds more like "aerr-waaa." Thankfully, Trainspotting comes complete with a glossary to help us poor souls translate.

Book Review
Irvine Welsh's controversial first novel, set on the heroin-addicted fringe of working-class youth in Edinburgh, is yet another exploration of the dark side of Scottishness. The main character, Mark Renton, is at the center of a clique of nihilistic slacker junkies with no hopes and no possibilities, and only "mind-numbing and spirit-crushing" alternatives in the straight world they despise. This particular slice of humanity has nothing left but the blackest of humor and a sharpness of wit. American readers can use the glossary in the back to translate the slang and dialectessential, since the dialogue makes the book. This is a bleak vision sung as musical comedy.
The New York Times Book Review, Mark Jolly
Blisteringly funny ... don't abandon everything for the movie.... Glue
Irvine Welsh
May 2001 Paperback Book Review With a title like Glue, it would seem reasonable to assume that Irvine Welsh's fifth book is a meditation on the pitfalls of solvent abuse. In fact the word refers to the bonds that unite four boys, all of whom have grown up in "the scheme"i.e., Edinburgh's slum-clearance flats, whose optimistic construction in the 1970s give way to the poverty, unemployment, and crime of the succeeding decades. It is the pervasive despair of these crumbling projects that defines the lives of the protagonists: budding DJ Carl Ewart, boxer Billy Birrell, work-shy, sex-mad Terry Lawson, and Andrew Galloway, a drug addict who has tested HIV-positive.
