    Eudora Welty
Dates: April 13 July 23 Born in Jackson, Mississippi, she attended the Mississippi College for Women, graduated from the University of Wisconsin (1929) and studied advertising at Columbia University for a year. Her first short story appeared in 1936, and gradually she began to be published in small, then regional and general circulation magazines. She published collections of her short stories and began publishing novels, as well. Soon after her first novel was published, she stopped writing to care full-time for her family for fifteen years: for two brothers with severe arthritis and her mother who had had a stroke. After her mother died in 1966, she returned to writing. She was a 6-time winner of the O. Henry Award for Short Stories, and her many awards include the National Medal for Literature, the American Book Award, and, in 1969, a Pulitzer Prize. She was also an accomplished and published photographer. But it is for her fiction, usually set in the rural South, that she's known as the First Lady of Southern Literature.

Download Description Virginia Woolf is one of the greatest novelists of the twentieth century, and To the Lighthouse is perhaps her crowning achievement. The story of the Ramsay family and the guests visiting their summer house in the Hebrides, Woolf? Customer Reviews: Painted lives An extraordinary book, at once light as air and dense with meaning. From the smallest happenings (a family gathered at a seaside house) seen in two brief glimpses (a long summer afternoon before the first world war, and a single morning ten years later), Virginia Woolf distils a profound meditation on love and loss, hope and disappointment, and human relationships, especially the precarious and limiting balance between men and women. But it is impossible to summarize in a sentence what Woolf achieves in two hundred pages, so let me just pick on three specifics: art, thought, and time.

    Eudora:
How a Southern writer came to lend her name to a computer program
MOST PEOPLE on the Internet know about Eudora. The e-mail program, that is.
Not so many, however, know that Eudora got its name after the Southern writer Eudora Welty.
The program was created by Steve Dorner in 1990 at the University of Illinois in Urbana. By then he worked for NCSA (National Center for Supercomputing Applications), and the first version of the program, which took about a year to develop, consisted of about 50.000 lines of code.
Dorner had a vision of making e-mail easier to send and receive than it was then, more user-friendly if you will. He also had a vision of a more widespread use of e-mail, something that is beginning to happen now.
"When I was in college, I read Eudora's story 'Why I Live at the P.O.'," Dorner explains to me in an e-mail message.
"The story stuck with me", Dorner says. "When it came time years later to name the program, I remembered the title, rearranged it a bit to 'Bringing the P.O. to where you live,' and used it for the program's motto. Then I named it Eudora."
Eudora Welty, this great Southern writer - by some proclaimed Nobel prize candidate - was born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1909. She still lives there, in the family house. She wrote in the local newspaper as well as for the Jackson radio station, before her stories began to appear in magazines like The Southern Review, Atlantic Monthly or The New Yorker.

          Happy birthday, Miss Welty
By Kate Moses I t's the end of summer at the beginning of the century, the dark middle of the night on a street and in a house just like the one where Eudora Welty grew up in Jackson, Miss., and a little girl named Josie has been roused from her bed, dressed in the wrong coat and escorted by her parents to a safe room during a tornado. As the storm passes eerily over and her smaller brother yells in his sleep, Josie floats through her dream-life childhood, effortlessly conjuring visions of the season now passing toy tattoos of flower baskets and Athenian ruins transferred onto her arms and legs, live June bugs on threads, the fascinating golden-haired teenage neighbor, Cornella, in her high-heeled shoes. The morning after the storm, Josie finds a wet scrap of paper outside a torn bit of ardent love letter with Cornella's name scribbled on it, which Josie hides in her "most secret place": Oh my darling I have waited so long ...

The excuse is a small fire that occurred in a back closet somewhere in the summer of 2008. The fire did not spread, but hopefully they are taking this time to renovate the building. Before it closed, the unmistakable smell of raw sewage would assail your nostrils the moment you stepped in the door. As for selection, the variety is great, plus they have the requisite interlibrary loan system. You can still use the other branches of this library and have books from this branch retrieved for you through the interlibrary loan system. Pros: Great Selection Cons: Building is Closed [which might be a PRO instead of a CON, given the smell]
