    Werfel, Franz

  • ASIN: Book Description Customer Reviews: Deserves to be required reading The Forty Days of Musa Dagh is an historical fiction drama set in WWI Turkey. During the war, the Turkish government imposes a policy of forced relocation on Armenian Christians living within its borders. Refusing to leave, the residents of several villages at the foot of Musa Dagh (Moses Mountain) decide to stay and fight. They take refuge on the mountain, constructing a fortress with their meager resources. The band of ordinary citizens courageously holds out for forty days, sucessfully holding off the better equipped, better trained and vastly larger Turkish army. Want to know how it ends? Read the book! The book is clearly written, and translates well from the original German. The imagery is vivid and I really cared about the characters. Although the book is long, there are few lulls. It's been over 18 months since I've read this book, and I still find myself thinking about it and I remember a surprising amount of it; it's that memorable!

Franz Werfel (1890-1945) Czech-born poet, playwright, and novelist, whose central themes were religious faith, heroism, and human brotherhood. Franz Werfel's best-known works include The Forty Days of Musa Dagh (1933), a classic historical novel that portrays Armenian resistance to the Turks, and The Song of Bernadette (1941). The latter book had its start when Werfel, a Jew escaping the Nazis, found solace in the pilgrimage town of Lourdes, where St. Bernadette had had visions of the Virgin. Werfel made a promise to "sing the song" of the saint if he ever reached the United States. He died in California in 1945. Das Bleibende Solang noch der Tatrawind leicht

Born in Prague (then part of the Austro–Hungarian Empire ), Werfel was the first of three children of a wealthy manufacturer of gloves and leather goods. His mother, Albine Kussi, was the daughter of a mill owner. His two sisters were Hanna (born 1896) and Marianne Amalie (born 1899). He was a contemporary and colleague of Franz Kafka Max Brod Martin Buber , and other Jewish intellectuals who flourished in the first decades of the 20th century. He served in the Austro–Hungarian Army on the Russian front and in the press office in Vienna, where he met and fell in love with Alma Mahler. In 1920 Alma , widow of Gustav Mahler , divorced architect Walter Gropius in order to be with Werfel by whom she had had a son, Martin, who was born prematurely, and who soon died; they finally married in 1929. Werfel was already an established author, having assumed a leading place in German letters as an expressionist playwright. A journey in 1929 to the Middle East and encountering starving refugees inspired his novel

(1890-1945), Austrian author, born in Prague. He attended the University of Prague and served in the Austrian army in World War I. Writing, however, was Werfel's major interest; his first play appeared in print in 1910. By the end of the war he had established his reputation in Austria and Germany as a novelist, poet, and dramatist. Werfel settled in Vienna until fear of Nazi Germany's expanding power forced him, as a Jew, to flee to France in 1938 and to the U.S. in 1940, where he spent the last years of his life. Werfel was fascinated by the theater. Among his plays are Juarez and Maximilian (1924), which was the basis of the American film Juarez (1939); and Jacobowsky und der Oberst (1944), which was adapted into both a successful theatrical comedy, Jacobowsky and the Colonel (1944), and a film, Me and the Colonel (1958). Werfel also wrote several novels, one of which, The Forty Days of Musa Dagh (1933; trans. 1934), an epic tale of Armenian resistance to Turkish invaders, had a remarkable success in the U.S. In The Song of Bernadette (1941; trans. 1942), which became a popular American film (1944), Werfel shows his sympathy with Roman Catholicism as he recounts the incidents leading to the elevation of a young girl to sainthood.
