The miracle at Lourdes, a glimpse of heaven
Revisiting author Franz Werfel's classic novel, `Song of Bernadette' A few months ago, facing a 15-hour flight from Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia, I called a friend, a distinguished literary critic, and asked, "What are the big great novels you think I haven't read?" Without missing a beat, he replied, "I bet you've never read The Forty Days of Musa Dagh." I admitted that I didn't even know who had written it. "Franz Werfel," came the response, "one of the most underrated writers of the 20th century." I got through 650 pages or so of Musa Dagh on the flight and finished the novel in Sydney; it's a terrific read, a gripping evocation of the terrors of the Armenian genocide during World War I and a finely-etched study of character. I was so impressed, in fact, that I decided to try another Werfel and had a go at "The Song of Bernadette" for the first time since the seventh or eighth grade. Reading it reminded me why everyone should have the opportunity to re-encounter, as an adult, books one was required to read as a teen-ager. The story of how this novel of Lourdes came to be written is something of a miracle itself. Franz Werfel, an outspoken anti-Nazi, had left Vienna for Paris when Austria was incorporated into the Third Reich. As the German Army approached Paris in 1940, Werfel and his wife, Alma Mahler, desperately tried to get to the United States through Spain and Portugal. They had neither passports nor visas; had they been caught, they would have been immediately sent to a concentration camp or shot.

Franz Werfel came from a wealthy family of Jewish merchants. He studied in Praque, Leipzig and Hamburg. According to the wishes of his father he worked for a trading company from 1912 until 1914. During the First World War he served in the Austrian army. After he was transferred to the war press agency in Vienna he was considered so pacifistic that he was even charged with treason.
In Vienna he met Alma Mahler, who left Walter Gropius to live with him. They married in 1929. By then he had made himself a name as an author, but "Die vierzig Tage des Musa Dagh" (1933) made him famous.
In 1933 his membership of the Preußischen Akademie der Dichtung was cancelled by the nazi's. In 1938 he emigrated to France, where he suffered a heart attack. In 1940 a spectular flight to the United States followed. He suffered a heart attack but continued smoking. After more heart attacks he died in 1945 in Beverly Hills. He was buried at the Rosendale Cemetery, but later his remains were transferred to the Zentralfriedhof in Vienna.
Werfel's early work was expressionistic. In later years he turned to historism and psychological realism.

As a consequence of his experiences with Nazism, he espoused human brotherhood, heroism, and religious faith. Trojan Women, which had a successful run in Berlin. He turned to fiction in 1924 with Verdi, Roman der Oper (Eng. trans., Verdi, A Novel of the Opera, 1925). International fame came with Die vierzig Tage des Musa Dagh The Forty Days of Musa Dagh, 1934), an epic novel in which Armenian villagers resist savage Turks until rescued by the French. Keeping ahead of a spreading Nazism, Werfel, a Jew, settled in an old mill in southern France. With the fall of France in 1940 (reflected in his play Jakobowsky und der Oberst, written in 1944 and successfully produced in New York City that year as Jakobowsky and the Colonel ), he decided to flee to the United States. In the course of his journey, he found solace in the pilgrimage town of Lourdes, Fr., where St. Bernadette had visions of the Virgin. He vowed to write about the Saint if he ever reached America and kept the vow with
