Biographical Information about Edith Wharton
One of the major figures in American literary history, Edith Wharton (1862-1937) presented intriguing insights into the American experience. Author of more than 40 volumesnovels, short stories, poetry, non-fictionWharton had a long and remarkable life. She was born during the Civil War, encouraged in her childhood literary endeavors by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and devoted to such varied friends as Henry James and Theodore Roosevelt; yet she had also read William Faulkner, James Joyce, and T. S. Eliot, and had actually met Sinclair Lewis and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Her upbringing provided her with insights on the upper class, while her sense of humor and polished prose produced fiction that appealed to a large audience. Recipient of the French Legion of Honor for her philanthropic work during World War I and of the Pulitzer Prize for her novel The Age of Innocence (1920), in 1923 she became the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate from Yale. Wharton was a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. A naturally gifted storyteller, Wharton wrote

Edith Wharton
Edith Wharton was born in New York, N.Y., into a wealthy and socially prominent family. She was educated privately by European governesses. During her early years, Wharton spent time with books rather than participating in the activities of high society. In 1885 she married Edward Wharton with no great enthusiasm. He was a Boston banker and twelve years her senior. Wharton's role as a wife with social responsibilities and her writing ambitions resulted in a nervous collapse. She had started to compose poems in her teens and she was advised that writing might help her recover. Her early stories did not deal with New York high society, but rather urban poverty. Mrs. Manstey's View was about an impoverished widow, and the severe Bunner Sisters realistically depicted the harsh fate of two sisters. This novella waited for its publication for a long time and finally appeared in Xingu and Other Stories (1916). Wharton's first book

WHARTON, Edith Italian Villas and Their Gardens NY, Century, 1904. The first and only edition of this nonfiction volume, heavily illustrated with photographs, drawings, and 26 full-color plates by Maxfield Parrish. This copy has a two-page autograph letter from Maxfield Parrish tipped in, written in his elegant, calligraphic hand, and referring to four of his paintings that the recipient, Mrs. Sage, owns and that Scribner's wanted permission to reproduce. The recipient and her husband were friends of Parrish and collectors of his paintings. Also tipped in is a three-page autograph letter from Edith Wharton to Mrs. Sage, thanking her for her letter; apparently Mrs. Sage indicated that Wharton's book had been a great help to her and that she was sending Wharton a Piranesi etching of Villa d'Este as a thank you. The book has been extra-illustrated, presumably by Mrs. Sage, with images of Italian villas, including a large image of Villa d'Este on the front free endpaper. The owner's small tasteful bookplate adorns the front pastedown. A wonderful, unique copy of this beautiful book, with a history of personal connections to the author and illustrator. All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted.
