June 27, 2006 Rating: 4 (of 10) In the alternate history of Colson Whitehead's The Intuitionist elevators have obtained nearly religious importance the only way, I suppose, that a man named Otis can be deified and a complex political structure has built up around the elevator-inspection industry. Lila Mae Watson has recently become the the first black female elevator inspector in the city. She is also one of the best, even though she follows the heretical inspection philosophy of Intuitionism, which eschews actual inspection for a mystical communion with the spirit of the elevator. (Um, ok.) But then, during an election year, an elevator under her watch undergoes a catastrophic failure, and her Intuitionism not to mention her gender, race, and 'tude make her an obvious target. Whitehead's writing style annoyed me. It's not (thank goodness) experimental, but it is easily distracted, constantly spinning off into unnecessary asides that hamper the flow of the story. The writing also contains a few too many deliberately pretty flourishes to feel natural. The result is an authorial voice that is both undisciplined and stilted, for all of Whitehead's obvious skill. He's trying too hard, and it shows. This creaky overachieving attitude extends to the novel's central premise, which is too implausible to bear the weight that Whitehead heaps upon it. In

Lila Mae Watson is the city's first female and second African American elevator inspector. In any ordinary universe, this would be a rather unremarkable achievement. However, in the world Whitehead creates for us, this is extraordinary. You see, elevator inspectors are held in high regard in this world it's a calling that requires 3 years of training at The Institute for Vertical Transport, one that parents dream of for their children. It's an election year in the Elevator Guild, and by long tradition, the head of the Guild gets the job of head of the city's Department of Elevator Inspectors. The Department is torn between two factions: Empiricists, who work by directly observing the mechanisms that drive the elevators they inspect; and Intuitionists, who feel the mechanisms and sense the elevator's state of being. The Empiricists have long controlled the Guild, but this year, the Intuitionists have a real chance of winning. Lila Mae is an Intuitionist. She's not overtly political, but she falls into this conflict. The book is somewhat disconcerting, as the details of the city are drawn from various cities and eras, creating an urban landscape that is jarring and a bit unnerving. The fact that the entire story is told from within the Department of Elevator Inspectors is further disquieting, as the reader is never certain whether the Inspectors really hold such high status, or if they just think they do.

The original John Henry story is one of almost Norse fatalism: an ambidextrous giant narrowly defeats a steam drill in a contest to drive steel through a mountain, to make way for a railroad. He subsequently dies of an exploded heart. John Henry Days is full of human embodiments of this theme, people pursuing symbolic victories for their own obscure reasons, even at significant personal risk. The novel is haunted by charactersobsessed collectors of paraphernalia, compulsive freeloading journalists, and the steel-drivin man himself, John Henrycaptivated, and finally summoned overboard, by the siren's call of professional destiny. Sacrifice in the name of Progress, Prosperity, Technology, is not an uncommon theme in our great American stories. Witness The Alamo, or the Horatio Alger oeuvre. But John Henry's story is a dark departure from these. If John Henry were at the Alamo, his death would augur prosperity for future generations of his countrymen, rather than the end of a way of life for himself and thousands of his fellows. Were he the hero in a Horatio Alger tale, his diligence would be rewarded with wealth and greater freedom, rather than an exhausted death in a tunnel. But he is not, and it does not. From the moment he is born, John Henry marches in steady rhythm towards his sealed fate, becoming in some respects more machine-like than the Burleigh steam drill that kills him. This sense of unavoidable destiny holds Colson Whitehead's rangy narrative under its spell, unifying fragments (better, filaments) of diverse chronology and perspective around a single publicity-event-turned-catastrophe: the inauguration of the

Book Description: The warm, funny, and supremely original new novel from one of the most acclaimed writers in America
The year is 1985. Benji Cooper is one of the only black students at an elite prep school in Manhattan. He spends his falls and winters going to roller-disco bar mitzvahs, playing too much Dungeons and Dragons, and trying to catch glimpses of nudity on late-night cable TV. After a tragic mishap on his first day of high schoolwhen Benji reveals his deep enthusiasm for the horror movie magazine Fangoriahis social doom is sealed for the next four years. But every summer, Benji escapes to the Hamptons, to Sag Harbor, where a small community of African American professionals have built a world of their own. Because their parents come out only on weekends, he and his friends are left to their own devices for three glorious months. And although he's just as confused about this all-black refuge as he is about the white world he negotiates the rest of the year, he thinks that maybe this summer things will be different. If all goes according to plan, that is.
