5. Beck, Oct. 99
Essay by Ervin Beck from the Mennonite Quarterly Review.
http://www.goshen.edu/mqr/pastissues/oct99beck.html
October 1999 The Politics of Rudy Wiebe in The Blue Mountains of China ERVIN BECK* Abstract : Although Rudy Wiebe's novel The Blue Mountains of China was published in 1970, two years before John Howard Yoder's The Politics of Jesus , the novel reflects many elements of Yoder's political ethics. The influence of Yoder upon Wiebe was direct, both through Yoder's essay "The Original Revolution" and through the friendship that developed between the two men from 1963 to 1967, when Wiebe taught at Goshen College. John Reimer-who bears traits of both Yoder and Wiebe-is the main voice for Yoderian ideas in the novel and, indeed, was created as a unifying device by Wiebe as his direct response to "The Original Revolution." This essay discusses four concerns of Yoder that are also present in Wiebe's novel: the nature of the church, strategy and revelation, effectiveness and faithfulness, and the outcome of history. From 1963 to 1967 a friendship developed between novelist Rudy Wiebe and theologian John Howard Yoder, when Wiebe taught English at Goshen College and Yoder taught at the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries and worked for the Mennonite Board of Missions, both in Elkhart, Indiana. After Wiebe moved back to Canada, their friendship was nurtured mainly by correspondence that continued until just before Yoder's death in 1997.

Stanley, G.F.G.
The Birth of Western Canada: A History of the Riel Rebellions, part two. London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1936. The Birth of Western Canada is widely regarded today as the classic work on Louis Riel and the North-West Rebellion. In trying to make sense of the rebellion at Red River in 1869-70 and later in Saskatchewan in 1885, Stanley attributed the troubles to "the problem of the frontier, namely the clash between primitive and civilized peoples." This interpretation not only reduced Riel to a leader of a "people who did not want to be civilized," but suggested that all mixed-blood peoples in fact, all Aboriginal peoples were essentially the same. The Birth of Western Canada contends that the people of the "frontier" were bewildered and frustrated by the events overtaking them and were unable to change or adjust to new circumstances.

EDITION: BINDING: PUBLISHER: Knopf Canada (09/26/1995) PAGES: This product is not available.
SUMMARY "A Discovery of Strangers" tells of the meeting of two civilizations - the first encounter of the nomadic Dene people with Europeans - in an imaginative reconstruction of John Franklin's first map-making expedition in 181921 in what is now the Northwest Territories. At the heart of the novel is a love story between twenty-two-year-old midshipman Robert Hood, the Franklin expedition's artist, and a fifteen-year-old Yellowknife girl known to the British as Greenstockings. A national bestseller, published also in Germany and China, Wiebe's first novel in eleven years and his twelfth work of fiction won him his second Governor General's Award for Fiction at the age of sixty, over strong competition from Margaret Atwood and Alice Munro.
It is a story of love, murder, greed and passion in an unforgiving Arctic landscape. French-Canadian voyageurs paddle the small British expedition into the land of the Yellowknives to search for the fabled Northwest Passage. While this trip would not prove as disastrous as Franklin's third expedition, nevertheless more than half his men did not survive the harsh conditions. The long winter stopover allows for interchange between the cultures. When the son of a Lancashire clergyman and the daughter of a native elder fall in love, they devise a language of their own to cross their wordless divide. Hood will not survive to see the birth of his daughter, perishing in 1821 in an attempt to reach Greenstockings's band 450 kilometres south. Nor will the Yellowknives survive much longer: within twenty years, they will be all but wiped out by a smallpox epidemic brought by the white men.
