Family tree and a discussion of the discrepancies between census records and the stories recorded in Wilder s books.

Build your own FREE website at Tripod.com Share: Facebook Twitter Digg reddit document.write(lycos_ad['leaderboard']); document.write(lycos_ad['leaderboard2']); Research into historical documentation of the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder has been a hobby (my husband would call it a "passion") of mine for many years. While doing genealogical research on my own family at the National Archives, I was unexpectedly led to an 1880 Federal Census page from the Dakota Territory (later to become North and South Dakota) and was startled to find the family of Charles and Caroline Ingalls among the names listed before me. Up to that time, I had not read Laura's books and rarely watched TV's "Little House on the Prairie." Until this historical "revelation," I had not realized that the Ingalls were real people. My intrigue with this fact took me back to my local library where I consumed all nine of Laura's juvenile "fiction" in short order. Inspired by her clear portrait of pioneer life, I began looking for biographical information about the author of these captivating stories of American history. Unlike today - when there are literally dozens of biographies about Laura Ingalls Wilder - very little information was available at that time. So, I decided to start my search for facts about the Ingalls and Wilder families in the documents that had "gotten me hooked" in the first place - census records. Upon inspection of the census pages, I suddenly realized that there were several discrepancies between data found there and what Laura had written in her books. For example: The 1880 census gave Carrie's birthplace as Kansas, but she appears as "baby Carrie" in Laura's first book, "Little House in the Big Woods," which is set in Wisconsin and takes place *before* the Ingalls moved to Kansas (the setting of Laura's third book, "Little House on the Prairie"). Similarly, the 1860 census for Malone, New York, (when Almanzo was only a year old) mentions a "Laura A. Wilder - age 16. There was no mention of a *sister* named Laura in "Farmer Boy" - Laura Ingalls Wilder's biography of a year of her husband's life as a child in upstate New York.

Loved by many, there is still not a lot known about the boy known as "Cap" Garland, and that is not because the information about him is not available.
If you ask the right people, you can find out a lot about Cap, but for some reason, no one has ever published anything completely devoted to him, before now.
Many people who have grown up reading about Cap and consider themselves true Cap Garland fans still don't know about his life after the age of 16, nor do they know about his horrific death, or of his tragic childhood.

The book that made literary history is now available in paperback! "Did Laura Ingalls Wilder really write the 'Little House' books? William Holtz's biography of Rose Wilder Lane, The Ghost in the Little House, answers this question in a way that will jolt fans of the much-loved children's series. . . . Holtz's vivid and sympathetic biography brings to our attention the real accomplishments of a remarkable and complicated woman who is no longer nameless: Rose Wilder Lane, co-author of the 'Little House' books." San Antonio Express-News "Holtz's book makes clear for the first time that [Lane] achieved something important and lasting in her writing with the Little House books. His argument about the collaboration between the two women is entirely convincing, and the next time I see the little House series on the shelf at the bookstore, I'll imagine Rose Wilder Lane's name next to her mother's on their covers." Los Angeles Times Book Review "A significant achievement. Holtz has uncovered the buried life of a woman whose struggle to separate herself from her mother and forge her own independent identity replicates the dilemma of many women, whose dedication to writing involved the sacrifice of her own ambitions, whose experience of American life during decades of cataclysmic social and political change comprises a life worth telling. . . . In setting the record straight with fullness, fairness and detail, William Holtz has made a genuine contribution to American life and letters."

Laura Ingalls Wilder
Biography Laura Elizabeth Ingalls was born on February 7, 1867, in the big woods of Wisconsin. She was the second daughter of Charles and Caroline Ingalls. In 1868, Pa and Ma took baby Laura and her sister Mary from the big woods to Chariton County, Missouri. They didn't stay in Missouri for long. Inspired by the Homestead Act of 1868 (which offered 160 acres of land to the settlers who would farm it and live on it for five years), Pa took the family to the prairies. The land Pa chose was about twelve miles from Independence, Kansas, within the boundaries of the Osage Diminished Reserve. There, Pa built a house and stable with the help of a friend, and neighbor, Mr. Edwards. After building a house and planting crops, the Ingalls were forced to leave because the government had changed its mind, and soldiers were coming to burn the houses and shoot people off of the land. Pa heard this and left his home immediately. This happened just after their third daughter, Carrie, was born. The girls went back to the big woods. Now the girls were able to see more of their grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Laura and Mary went to Barry Corner School and spent lots of time playing with their cousins. Ma was glad to be home, but Pa longed to go west. They did go back west in 1874. The Ingalls lived in a dugout near Walnut Grove, Minnesota until Pa was able to build a beautiful house of sawed boards. Pa raised a wonderful wheat crop until the grasshoppers attacked!

Pioneering Introduction Pepin Montgomery County, Kansas Walnut Grove Burr Oak ... Mansfield Born February 7, 1867 Laura Elizabeth Ingalls began her life in the Big Woods of Pepin County, Wisconsin. Her pioneering journeys began just a few years later when Pa started his long search for a productive farm and a permanent home in the west. This journey continued for the next ten years as the Ingallses moved often, faced hard luck, hard work, and shared many adventures which Laura recounted in her "Little House" books. For a decade Charles and Caroline Ingalls looked for a permanent homestead without success. Finally Ma's concern for an education for her girls and opportunities for blind Mary led to one last move west to Dakota Territory. Laura Ingalls is born near Pepin, Wisconsin.
