Laura Ingalls Wilder Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867 in Pepin, Wisconsin. She was second of five children born to Caroline and Charles Philip Ingalls. Laura had three sisters and one brother. Her father called himself a pioneer man and dreamed of going West to explore and settled on unknown territory. Laura was four when she first started school. The name of the school was the Barry Corner School in Pepin, Wisconsin. Laura only went to school once in a while because her family kept moving from one place to another in their covered wagon. When Laura was 13 her family settled in De Smet and she went to school on a regular basis. She continued school in De Smet until she was 16 but she never graduated. Laura married Almanzo Wilder on August 25, 1885. They moved several times but then settled on a small farm in Mansfield Missouri. This is where they stayed for the rest of their life. They had one daughter. Her name was Rose and she was born December 5, 1886. Rose kept asking her mother for stories of her pioneer days. This is how Laura got started writing. Laura was 65 when she published her first book entitled Little House In The Big Woods. Then she stared writing more about when she was a little girl and that led to the Little House series. But not all were about her childhood. A weekly television series, Little House on the Prairie, began in 1974 and ran for many seasons.

When LAURA INGALLS WILDER started writing her classic "Little House" book series in 1932, she had no idea of creating fame for herself or the places where she had lived. She wrote simply to preserve tales of a lost era in American history, the pioneer period she vividly recalled from her growing-up years on the midwestern frontier in the 1870's and 1880's. When Laura completed her eight-volume series in 1943, she had achieved a lasting and substantial literary picture of pioneer life as she had experienced it in Wisconsin, Kansas, Minnesota, and South Dakota.
"I had no idea I was writing history," Laura remarked when her books were well known both in America and in foreign countries where they were translated. (The books are now printed in over 40 languages.) But readers of all ages accepted the Ingalls and Wilder families as chosen friends. Thousands wrote to Laura at her home on Rocky Ridge Farm in Mansfield, Missouri. Fans sought out the sites of her books and stopped to visit her in her Ozark Mountain home, right up to her death in 1957 at the age of 90.
The visiting still goes on. Immediately after Laura's death, the home she and her husband Almanzo built was preserved and opened for readers. In De Smet, South Dakota, a Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society was founded to offer history and hospitality to increasing numbers of summer tourists. Through the years, each of the book sites has joined the ranks of literary-historical spots dedicated to the pioneering spirit and writings of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Meet the Author
Laura Ingalls Wilder
Laura Ingalls Wilder lived the events described in her Little House books. As a young girl, she traveled with her parents and her older sister, Mary, in a covered wagon across Minnesota, Iowa, and Kansas, and into Indian Territory, where they lived in the Little House on the Prairie. Then the family traveled back to western Minnesota and lived on the banks of Plum Creek. Finally, they went west again and settled on the shores of Silver Lake in Dakota Territory. Wilder's stories let readers see how pioneers lived in the 1870s and 1880s. The Ingalls family suffers through everything from grasshopper plagues to threats from hostile Indians, but their sense of fun, love, and family closeness never fades. Wilder won many honors for her books, which have been translated into 26 languages and were turned into a popular television series. How did Laura Ingalls Wilder become a first-time book author at age 65? It started with a letter from her daughter, Rose, a writer. Rose urged her mother to write down some of the stories she used to tell during Rose's childhood, and Little House in the Big Woods was born.
