New York Occupation(s): Playwright Writing period: Literary genre: Southern Gothic Influences: Anton Chekhov D. H. Lawrence August Strindberg Thomas Lanier Williams III (March 26, 1911 – February 25, 1983), better known by the pseudonym Tennessee Williams , was a major American playwright and one of the prominent playwrights of the twentieth century. The name "Tennessee" was a name given to him by college friends because of his southern accent and his father's background in Tennessee. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for A Streetcar Named Desire in 1948 and for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 1955. In addition to those two plays, The Glass Menagerie in 1945 and The Night of the Iguana in 1961 received the New York Drama Critics' Circle Awards. His 1952 play The Rose Tattoo (dedicated to his lover, Frank Merlo), received the Tony Award for best play. Genre critics maintain that Williams wrote in the Southern Gothic style. Southern Gothic is a subgenre of the Gothic writing style, unique to American literature. Like its parent genre, it relies on supernatural, ironic, or unusual events to guide the plot. Unlike its predecessor, it uses these tools not for the sake of suspense, but to explore social issues and reveal the cultural character of the

Weaknesses: Athletic Ability, Feet, Closing Speed, Pass Rush By Daryl Breault With San Diego and Pittsburgh both expected to be looking for nose tackles come spring time to replace vets Jamal Williams and Casey Hampton as they get up there in years, Dan Williams should find himself in high demand come Draft time.
The sturdy DT is not a big playmaker as a pass rusher and doesn’t rack up sacks like some of his competition at the position, but Williams is a huge part of the Tennessee defence. His play up front allows smaller LB like leading tackler Rico McCoy (6’1”, 220lbs) flow to the ball and rack up tackles.
Williams has put up at least 40 tackles each year since 2007, posting 56 tackles so far on the year to go with his team leading 8.5 TFL. Through the first 5 games of the season, Williams had only 1 TFL but has really turned in on over his last 6, picking up 7.5 of his total in that span, including 2 in each of his last two games against Vandy and Ole Miss. Don’t let the Rebels 359 rushing yards fool you though. Much of that high number came from Dexter McCluster, who racked up 282 yards and 4 TD in that game but did much of his damage on the outside. Williams put up 48 tackles and 8.5 TFL in 2008 despite being hampered by an ankle injury. His lack of big plays keeps him from getting the recognition he deserves, but scouts and pundits are paying attention to the beast in the middle of the Vols defence.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Tennessee Williams
Cat on a hot tin roof is a play about the human experience in a society, which tries to dictate to people how they should live, and at a time where lack of human communication leads to the unavoidable loneliness of man. In the overcharged circumstances of a family crisis many truths are revealed about human feeling: our desperate fear of death, our love of life, our hidden guilt, our insecurities, our inability to face the truth, our materialism, our greatness, our pettinessThe impression given of man is of a dramatic helplessness, an inability to do anything else but be human

T Early the following morning, Blanche ventures back to the apartment and finds Stella blissfully content after a night of love-making with Stanley. Blance is angry that Stella would choose to live with such a violent man, but Stella insists that Blanche has just seen Stanley at his worst and that he is really very gentle and is ashamed of his behavior the previous night. Blanche refuses to believe this and accuses Stella of living in denial. She tries to convince her sister to leave Stanley "before it's too late." Blanche claims that she recently ran into a man she had known in college and that he is now a millionaire in Texas. She suggests that this man, Shep Huntleigh, might set her and Stella up in a business if she will just leave Stanley. But Stella refuses to even discuss such a suggestion. STELLA: Haven't you ever ridden on that street-car?

SYNOPSIS AUTHOR BIO QUOTES SCENE ONE A two-story corner building on a street in New Orleans. A dark evening in early in May.
Upon her return, Stella quietly listens as Blanche expresses how distasteful she finds Stella's current living conditions. They just aren't good enough for her baby sister. Blanche then explains that she has taken a leave of absence from the highschool she teaches at so that she could come for a visit. Blanche also informs Stella that they have lost Belle Reve, the family plantation that they grew up on. Stella expresses her astonishment, and Blanche accuses her of having abandoned the family home, of having left her (Blanche) to struggle alone. BLANCHE: I, I I Shortly thereafter, Stanley returns from bowling. Blanche is immediately frightened by Stanley's rough demeanor. The two of them engage in an awkward, but sexually charged conversation while Stella hides in the bathroom where she has gone to regain her composure after Blanche's accusations about abandoning Belle Reve. SCENE TWO Six o'clock the following evening. Blanche is bathing. Stella explains to Stanley that Belle Reve has been lost. He wants to see the paperwork, suspects that Blanche might be trying to swindle them out of their share of the estate. Stella begs Stanley not to upset Blanche because of the ordeal that she's been through. Stanley then goes through Blanche's wardrobe trunk and jerks out an armful of dresses.

Biography
American writer, poet, and outstanding playwright most noted for his powerful, emotional and dramatic works, "The Glass Menagerie," 1945, "A Streetcar Named Desire," 1947, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," 1955, and "The Night of the Iguana," 1961. He won four New York Drama Critics Circle Awards and two Pulitzer Prizes. Successful films have been made out of a number of his plays. Williams literary output numbers more than 70 plays, 15 screenplays, five books of prose and two books of poems. Tennessee Williams was born Thomas Lanier Williams III in an Episcopal rectory in Columbus, Mississippi, where his mother’s father was rector. He was one of three children. His sister, Rose, was two years older, and his brother, Dakin, eight years younger. His father, Cornelius Coffin Williams, a traveling salesman, did not approve of his desire to become a writer. Thomas was a sickly child who liked to read. He missed an entire year of school at one point due to a bout with diphtheria that left him with a kidney problem and partial paralysis, which he eventually overcame. His father began calling him "Miss Nancy," referring to his delicate and sissified state. His doting mother gave him a typewriter for his eleventh birthday. With this event, his lifelong passion for writing took hold.
