yore is us
"The twentieth century was a train," sings Jack Hardy, one of the great singer-songwriters of the last century, who rode it. The line is from a song called "The 20th Century," which appears in The Passing ), his last album but one. He is not yet 60. Like Jack Williamson, who is not yet 100, he is still alive. They have both scored lives of accomplishment during the century they just left. They both scored high. The song evokes a train, of course, the very train John Barrymore took from Chicago to New York in Twentieth Century ), dir Howard Hawks. It also evokes the wind-blurred abyss of the past, it evokes the 20th century itself, which was like a train, or a Ship of Fools filled to the gunwales with the humans of the West. The 20th Century was a progress; a great noisy locomotive of history we all thought we were in the van of, we readers and writers of science fiction, like Jack Williamson. And now that we have passed into a different dark, how fortunate it is to have Dr Williamson still here, so that, by trying to gain some measure of the man, we may obtain at the same time some measure of the extent of the passage from then to now. Gateway to Paradise, The Collected Stories of Jack Williamson, Volume Six List Price: Price:
Description
Grand Master Jack Williamson passed away last year at the age of 98, but the ambitious program to collect his short fiction continues. Of the 10 tales in this collection (three of which are full-length novels!) over half have never been reprinted before. Featured is the first book appearance of the original novella-length version of "Darker Than You Think," and the magazine texts of "The Reign of Wizardry," and "Gateway to Paradise." Williamson's afterword has his recollections on the genesis of these tales and the pre-World War II science fiction field. Like previous volumes in this series, the full-color endpapers reproduce the original magazine covers (with artwork by pulp masters including Belarski, Cartier, Rogers and Scott) of the stories herein, and the binding is designed to match the 1940s editions of Williamson's works published by Fantasy Press. Several volumes in this series are already out of print, so make sure to reserve your copy to avoid disappointment.

Jack Williamson May 2006 Mass Market Paperback From Publishers Weekly This trippy stand-alone from Hugo- and Nebula-winner Williamson reads like a novelization of Paul Verhoeven directing Jules Verne's combined rewrite of H.P. Lovecraft's The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath and C.S. Lewis's Perelandra. It follows the world-hopping adventures of four poker buddies: physicist Derek and archeologist Lupe, both so obsessed with exploration and getting grants that they have no sense of personal safety; Ram, a linguist descended from an extraterrestrial deity; and Will, a weak-willed English professor who just wants to go home. Williamson's artificial creatures are brilliant as always, so much so that the shape-shifting intelligent metal caretakers of these distant planets are more lovingly and intricately described than the people. Derek and Lupe's absence through most of the book renders... The Work of Jack Williamson: An Annotated Bibliography and Guide Richard A. Hauptmann
