Windling's work has been translated into French, German, Spanish, Italian, Czech, Lithuanian, Turkish, Russian, Japanese, and Korean. In the American publishing field, Windling is one of the primary creative forces behind the mythic fiction resurgence that began in the early 1980s—first through her work as an innovative editor for the Ace and Tor Books fantasy lines; secondly as the creator of the 'Fairy Tales' series of novels (featuring reinterpretations of classic fairy tale themes by Jane Yolen Steven Brust Pamela Dean Patricia C. Wrede ... Charles de Lint , and others); and thirdly as the editor of over thirty anthologies of magical fiction. She is also recognized as one of the founders of the urban fantasy genre, having published and promoted the first novels of

Home Library Children's Authors (also known as Bellamy Bach, a group pseudonym) Terri Windling has made a great impact on the world of fantasy literature, as an editor and artist as well as a writer. Best known for editing numerous anthologies of fantasy literature for adults, including the annual The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror compendiums, Windling has also written several of her own adult novels in addition to authoring and editing works for younger readers. Windling stumbled into her first publishing job almost accidentally, as she explained to Michael Jones of Green Man Review. Immediately after graduating from college, she moved to New York hoping to get a job working on The Dark Crystal, a fantasy film by Jim Henson. She was not hired, so "I looked around to see what else I could do with my passion for folklore and folkloric art," she explained. She applied for several different jobs in publishing, both artistic and editorial positions, and was offered a job as an editorial assistant, a starting point which would begin her career as a highly regarded editor of fantasy. The next decade Windling worked as an editor for some of the premiere publishers in the fantasy genre. During this time, Windling worked with fellow editor Mark Alan Arnold to create the "Borderland" series, which is set in a city on the border between everyday Earth and the land of the elves. Normally, humans and elves are separated by the magical border, but sometimes the barrier is lifted and the two can interact. The four long stories in the opening volume were called "unusually well written in terms of character development, plot tension, and innovation" by

Customer Reviews
Amazing These are retold fairy tales, but not the funny ones. Still, by exploring the tragedy, warmth, and soulfulness of these tales, deeply talented authors delve into the soul and try to find comfort int hese new flavors of fairy tales. Fairy tales are not just for children This anthology is one of the most emotionally wrenching and satisfying collections of stories that I've read-not just from fantasy authors, but from anyone. Dealing with the darker aspects of childhood, including abuse and alienation, the stories and poetry are full of depth and transformation; magic, despair, and ultimately hope. Some exceptional stories are "The Armless Maiden" by Midori Snyder, "The Juniper Tree" by Peter Straub, "The Lion and the Lark" by Patricia McKillip, "The Lily and the Weaver's Heart" by Nancy Etchemendy, "In the House of My Enemy" by Charles De Lint, and "In the Night Country" by Ellen Steiber. The poems are all beautiful. This book is definitely on my desert island list.

Book Review
After a hiatus of some years, the Fairy Tale series of novels by various authors, edited by Terri Windling, has made a welcome return. The first post-hiatus book is fantasist extraordinaire Tanith Lee's White as Snow, a retelling of Snow White darkly intertwined with the myth of Demeter and Persephone. If you're familiar with both Lee, winner of the August Derleth Award and several World Fantasy Awards, and Windling, also winner of several World Fantasy Awards, and the premier fantasy editor of modern times, then you would expect White as Snow to be a terrific novel. And you would be right. In an alternate-history medieval Europe, the noble maiden Arpazia, raised in an isolated castle, finds herself the captive of the conquering general-king Draco. The only remnant of her former life is an exotic glass mirror possessed of... The Green Man

SUMMARY It is an old, old tale, the German story of Briar Rose, the Sleeping Beauty. Now one of America's most celebrated writers tells it afresh, set this time in the forests patrolled by the German army during World War II. A tale of castles, of mists and thorns, of a beautiful sleeping princess, and an astonishing revelation of death and rebirth.
A tale that will leave you changed forever.
