John Winthrop
Home Library Miscellaneous Biographies John Winthrop (1606-1676), American colonial statesman and scientist, founded several New England settlements. He obtained Connecticut's favorable charter and served as its chief executive. Oldest child of Massachusetts Bay Colony's first governor, John Winthrop was born at Groton , England, on Feb. 12, 1606. His mother died when he was nine, and his well-to-do father sent him to Bury St. Edmunds Grammar School and Trinity College, Dublin. John studied law desultorily, then served as captain's secretary in the fleet sent to relieve La Rochelle in 1627. After that expedition's failure, he embarked on a European tour. Returning to London, Winthrop found his father determined to join the Puritan migration to America. John remained behind to sell the family estate and marry his cousin Martha Fones in 1631. Late that year the couple arrived in Boston. For the next 14 years Winthrop roamed restlessly. In 1633 he led a party to found Ipswich, where his wife and infant daughter died. Returning to England, John visited leading Puritans and obtained the

Born in West Suffolk, England, John Winthrop made major contributions in the founding and chronicling of the history of New England. An attorney and justice of the peace, Winthrop lost a profitable government appointment in 1629, because of his Puritan leanings. In that same year, he was elected governor of the new colony to be founded in America by the Massachusetts Bay Company. Winthrop served as governor in Massachusetts from 1630 to 1634, from 1637 to 1640, and finally from 1646 to 1649. Winthrop provided the best primary source of information on early Massachusetts Bay by maintaining a journal that was later published as The History of New England

John Winthrop (January 12, 1588 – March 26, 1649) led a group of English Puritans to the New World, joined the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1629 and was elected their first governor on April 8, 1630. As governor of the Colony, he established the center of government at Boston. In his famous sermon, A Modell of Christian Charity when Winthrop said: "...for we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill, the eyes of all people are upon us...," he urged his listeners to have a standard that shines out for others to notice. In this sermon, he declared that the Puritan colonists emigrating to the New World were part of a special pact with God to create a holy community. This speech is often seen as a forerunner to the concept of American exceptionalism. The speech is also well known for arguing that the wealthy had a holy duty to look after the poor. The idea of restoration, of building an ideal society here on earth, emerged as a dominant theme in later American religious thought. President Ronald Reagan among others cited Winthrop as a source of inspiration. Winthrop has been described as America's "forgotten founding father."

GOV. JOHN WINTHROP
"John Winthrop was born in Suffolk, England in 1587. He was his parents' only son. His father, Adam Winthrop, was the lord of Groton Manor, a small estate in the English countryside. John grew up on his father's estate, amid gently rolling hills, fields of wheat and rye, and shallow ponds. In his childhood he as educated by a private tutor, and at the age of fourteen his father enrolled him in Trinity College in Cambridge. He studied there for two years and then returned to Groton to begin practical training in running his father's estate. Soon Adam Winthrop saw his son's hidden marriage problem and introduced him to Mary Worth (Forth - see below , the daughter of a distinguished Essex nobleman. Three weeks later John was married at the age of seventeen. Ten months later, just after his eighteenth birthday, he became a father. John and his wife Mary worked hard and had six children in ten years. Then Mary suddenly died. After six months John remarried, but on his first wedding anniversary his second wife died. One year later John married his third wife, Margaret. By all accounts, Margaret was one of the most appealing women in all of American history. She was beautiful and gracious. She was also a woman of faith. John Winthrop treasured her as his greatest possession. When he traveled away from home, he never failed to send her love letters.
In seventeenth-century England there was no such thing as freedom of religion. There was only the Church of England. But as the Church grew more politicized and hostile to Puritan ideas, it became clear to John that there was little or nothing he could do to reform the Church from within. He did not want to start a war that he could never win. Also, his son Henry became somewhat rebellious, and John began to worry that he might lose his children to the godless popular culture. At the age of forty-two, after a painful struggle, John decided that the only real choice was for him to take his family and move away from England. Rather than fighting political battles with the authorities, he would quietly move away to a new land where he could worship God freely and raise his children in an environment of faith.

Winthrop, John
(b . Jan. 22 [Jan. 12, Old Style], 1588, Edwardstone, Suffolk, Eng.d. April 5 [March 26], 1649, Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony [U.S.]), first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the chief figure among the Puritan founders of New England.
Background and early life.
Winthrop's father was a newly risen country gentleman whose 500-acre (200-hectare) estate, Groton Manor, had been bought from Henry VIII at the time of the Reformation. Winthrop thus belonged to a classthe gentrythat became the dominant force in English society between 1540 and 1640, and he early assumed the habit of command appropriate to a member of the ruling class in a highly stratified society. At age 15 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge; at age 17 he married the first of his four wivesMary Forth, daughter of an Essex squireand the next year the first of his 16 children was born. Like many members of his class, Winthrop studied law, served as justice of the peace, and obtained a government office; from 1627 to 1629 he was an attorney at the Court of Wards and Liveries. For more than 20 years Winthrop was primarily a country squire at Groton, with no discernible interest in overseas colonization. He was an ardently religious person. From his early teens Winthrop threw himself into scriptural study and prayers, and gradually he trained himself into a full-fledged Puritan, convinced that God had elected him to sainthood. His religious experience reinforced his elitist outlook, but it also made him a social activist. Like other prominent Puritans, Winthrop dedicated himself to remaking, as far as possible, the wicked world as he saw it, arguing that "the life which is most exercised with tryalls and temptations is the sweetest, and will prove the safeste."
