Wolfe, Thomas
Thomas Clayton Wolfe (1900-1938) wrote four autobiographical works that have made him an American literary legend. Wolfe was born in Asheville, North Carolina on October 3, 1900, the youngest of eight children. Wolfe attended private school before he went to the University of North Carolina at the age of 16. He wrote for school publications and edited the college newspaper, the Tar Heel. His first published works were two poems in the University of North Carolina Magazine in December, 1917. Professor Frederich Koch encouraged Wolfe¢s work with the theater, and when Wolfe graduated he departed for Harvard University to study the discipline. Following graduation and an additional workshop year at Harvard, Wolfe was unable to have his plays put into circulation. So, from 1924 until 1930, he taught English at New York University. During Thomas Wolfe¢s tenure at New York University, he traveled abroad. During a vacation in London he met Aline Bernstein, a much older and married woman. Their love affair provided emotional and financial support, and in 1929 he published his first novel

  • ASIN: Book Description George Webber has written a successful novel about his family and hometown. When he returns to that town he is shaken by the force of the outrage and hatred that greets him. Family and friends feel naked and exposed by the truths they have seen in his book, and their fury drives him from his home. He begins a search for his own identity that takes him to New York and a hectic social whirl; to Paris with an uninhibited group of expatriates; to Berlin, lying cold and sinister under Hitler's shadow. At last Webber returns to America and rediscovers it with love, sorrow, and hope. Customer Reviews: Literary marvel; not for everyone

Thomas Clayton Wolfe (October 3, 1900 – September 15, 1938) was a major American novelist of the early 20th century. Wolfe wrote four lengthy novels , plus many short stories , dramatic works and novel fragments. He is known for mixing highly original, poetic, rhapsodic, and impressionistic prose with autobiographical writing. His books , written and published during the 1920s and 1930s, reflect vividly on American culture and mores of the period, albeit filtered through Wolfe's sensitive, sophisticated and hyper-analytical perspective. He became very famous during his own lifetime. After Wolfe's death, his chief contemporary

    THE LOST BOY
    Thomas Wolfe
Light came and went and came again, the booming strokes of three o'clock beat out across the town in thronging bronze from the courthouse bell, light winds of April blew the fountain out in rainbow sheets, until the plume returned and pulsed, as Grover turned into the Square. He was a child, dark-eyed and grave, birthmarked upon his neck a berry of warm brown-and with a gentle face, too quiet and too listening for his years. The scuffed boy's shoes, the thick-ribbed stockings gartered at the knees, the short knee pants cut straight with three small useless buttons at the side, the sailor blouse, the old cap battered out of shape, perched sideways up on top of the raven head, the old soiled canvas bag slung from the shoulder, empty now, but waiting for the crisp sheets of the afternoon-these friendly, shabby garments, shaped by Grover, uttered him. He turned and passed along the north side of the Square and in that moment saw the union of Forever and of Now. Light came and went and came again, the great plume of the fountain pulsed and winds of April sheeted it across the Square in a rainbow gossamer of spray. The fire department horses drummed on the floors with wooden stomp, most casually, and with dry whiskings of their clean, coarse tails. The street cars ground into the Square from every portion of the compass and halted briefly like wound toys in their familiar quarter-hourly formula. A dray, hauled by a boneyard nag, rattled across the cobbles on the other side before his father's shop. The courthouse bell boomed out its solemn warning of immediate three, and everything was just the same as it had always been.

    Biography
American playwright and novelist who wrote "Look Homeward, Angel," 1929, "The Web and The Rock," 1939 and "You Can't Go Home Again," 1940. Educated at the University of No. Carolina and graduating with an M.A. from Harvard, 1922, he taught English at the New York University from 1924-1930. Wolfe's first novel, "Look Homeward, Angel" was a great success, leading to his writing full time in America and Europe. Although he was criticized for his lack of discipline, he wrote both eloquently and forcefully in powerful prose. In 1938 he suffered from pneumonia. This produced a recurrence of tuberculosis of the lungs, which led to fatal tuberculosis of the brain. He died after brain surgery on 9/15/1938, Baltimore, MD. at the John Hopkins Hospital. His books, written during the Great Depression show an almost obsessive interest in the self, particularly the development of the self within the context of the family and community In his personal life, the author was known by friends as an enthusiastic yet lonesome man, who often desired more than he was able to attain in happiness, health, and love. He died unmarried, young, and without having realized his full potential as an artist. Spine lettering worn but readable, a very good copy in worn, good only first issue dustwrapper (with the Wolfe portrait on the rear panel) lacking the bottom couple inches of the spine, with several other modest chips and tears, and several internal tape repairs. This copy is Inscribed by the author: "To Fidelia E. Stark with warmest thanks. Thomas Wolfe Oct 30, 1929." Also laid in is a four-page carbon manuscript (folded, small breaks at the folds, else near fine), unsigned, but almost certainly by Maxwell Perkins dated April 17, 1929 entitled "Selling Points: Look Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe." The "Selling Points," in the third person, recounts the editorial process in detail, and enumerates the literary wonderment of the book. A modern classic, the author's first book, and generally considered his major achievement, a breathtaking autobiographical novel. An inscribed copy, with an intriguing manuscript account of the birth of the novel.
