    Amazon.com Kesey's theatrical metamorphosis from the distinguished author of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest to the abominable shaman of the "Acid Test" soirees that launched The Grateful Dead required Wolfe's Day-Glo prose account to endure (though Kesey's own musings in Demon Box are no slouch either). Even now, Wolfe's book gives what Wolfe clearly got from Kesey: a contact high. Tim Appelo Book Description Tom Wolfe's much-discussed kaleidoscopic non-fiction novel chronicles the tale of novelist Ken Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters. In the 1960s, Kesey led a group of psychedelic sympathizers around the country in a painted bus, presiding over LSD-induced "acid tests" all along the way. Long considered one of the greatest books about the history of the hippies, Wolfe's ability to research like a reporter and simultaneously evoke the hallucinogenic indulgence of the era ensures that this book, written in 1967, will live long in the counter-culture canon of American literature. Tom Wolfe: Ein ganzer Kerl
    (Roman)
    Kritik:
Originaltitel: A Man in Full

    Tom Wolfe: Ein ganzer Kerl
    Inhaltsangabe:
    Charles Earl Croker ist gerade sechzig Jahre alt geworden. Er hat zwar Probleme mit einem Knie, aber auf seiner Plantage Turpmtine in Südwest-Georgia packt er noch immer blitzschnell eine ausgewachsene Klapperschlange mit bloßen Händen hinter dem Kopf, ohne von ihr gebissen zu werden. Turpmtine, das sind 29 Morgen Land, 59 Pferde, 22 Maultiere, 40 Hunde, 36 Gebäude, eine asphaltierte Startpiste und ein Hangar für Charlies Privatflugzeuge. Dabei unterhält er die Plantage ausschließlich, um Wachteln jagen zu können. Mit Geschäftsfreunden, die ihn dabei begleiten, wettet er dann, dass er in einem explosionsartig aufstiebenden Wachtelschwarm ausnahmslos männliche Vögel trifft, obwohl der Unterschied zwischen Männchen und Weibchen kaum zu erkennen ist.

    Zum großen Gesellschaftsroman fehlt Tom Wolfe nur noch der ganze Kerl. Weil er ihn in der coolen New Yorker Finanzwelt nicht gefunden hat, sucht er ihn jetzt in den Südstaaten. Willkommen in Atlanta. von Heike Runge
    • print_button('Artikel');
    Tom Wolfe gehört zu jenen Autoren, die noch immer aufs Ganze gehen. Zur Selbststilisierung des Autors als Dandy-Macker gehört die Verachtung der Avantgarde wie der gesamten Moderne und die Behauptung, das Verschwinden des großen Gesellschaftsromans, das Ende der universalen Fiktionen, sei lediglich der Faulheit von Autoren wie der Feigheit von Verlegern anzulasten, das Ergebnis der anämische Roman, die von kulturellem Separatismus geprägte Erzählung über eine Klasse, ein Geschlecht, eine Minderheit. Die Anwürfe des auf Exzentrizität bedachten Autors können nicht populistisch genug sein, wenn es darum geht, dem naturalistischen Roman zum erneuten Triumph zu verhelfen: Die Gesellschaft ist euch zu komplex, zu fragmentiert, zu gegensätzlich, um die Bereiche erzählerisch zu integrieren? Bullshit, alles lässt sich recherchieren und darstellen! Mit "Fegefeuer der Eitelkeiten" (1987) unterzog Tom Wolfe die Literatur einer Art Crash-Test und ließ die gegensätzlichen Milieus von Arm und Reich, Schwarz und Weiß, Zentrum und Peripherie, Getto und Elite, South-Bronx und Manhattan aufeinanderprallen. Durchaus ironisch bewerkstelligte er dies, indem er einen schwarzen Jungen aus der South-Bronx vor das Mercedes-Coupé des Masters of the Universe des Shooting-Stars der Wall-Street, Sherman McCoy laufen ließ.

    Biography
    American writer, a major influential reporter and author. He was one of the originators of "the new journalism" of the '60s, a brilliant, perceptive genius. He originated such phrases as "radical chic," "the Me decade," and "the right stuff." His novel "The Right Stuff," 1979, was sold for the film rights for a half million dollars but did not do well at the box office. His 1987 best-selling first novel, "Bonfire of the Vanities" was praised and savaged with equal fervor but as a movie rewritten by Hollywood, it failed onscreen. Wearing a characteristic white suit, best-dressed and dashing, he is soft spoken but thrives on antagonism. He doesn't just sit back and wait for the pot to boil over, he usually fans the flames. His second novel and 12th book, "A Man in Full," was published in November 1998 with a first print run of 1.2 million copies. The book reportedly took him eight years to write.
