(V.i.7-17) [1] It is strange why the first thing that springs up from some dark forgotten recess of the mind on reading William Wordsworth's (1770-1850) 'Lucy' poems is this observation made by Theseus in his palace in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer-Night's Dream . These lines were written in 1595 or 1596, almost two centuries before the 'Lucy' lyrics composed in or after the winter of 1798-99, or even Wordsworth's Preface to the second (1800) edition of

Wordsworth, William (1770 - 1850) UK Writer VD
English poet William Wordsworth was still a student at Cambridge when he developed a passion for the Alps while reading texts by Rousseau. In 1790, he left for Switzerland with a friend and began his long exploration journey from Geneva . He discovered the majestic alpine scenery and was moved by the sight of the grandiose landscapes before him. Captured by the beauty of this mountainous country, he traveled the length and breadth of Switzerland. Upon return to England, Wordsworth was filled with the power of the Alps, to which he dedicated one of his most beautiful poems, Prelude . He described the souvenirs, still fresh in his mind, of his ascents to the unspoiled mountain peaks. The poet also described his sensations and feelings when they crossed the Alps: for we still had hopes that pointed to the clouds Wordsworth later returned to Switzerland with his wife and his sister. They traveled to the most beautiful sites such as

William Wordsworth (1770 - 1850)
British poet who spent his life in the Lake District of Northern England. Wordsworth, along with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, can be said to have started the English Romantic movement with their collection LYRICAL BALLADS in 1798. When many poets still wrote about ancient heroes in grandiloquent style, Wordsworth focused on nature, children, the poor, common people, and used ordinary words to express his personal feelings. His definition of poetry as "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings arising from emotion recollected in tranquillity" was shared by a number of his followers. "Poetry is the breath and finer spirit of all knowledge; it is the impassioned expression which is in the countenance of all Science." (from Lyrical Ballads , 2nd ed., 1800) William Wordsworth was born in Cockermouth, Cumberland, in the Lake District. His father was John Wordsworth, Sir James Lowther's attorney. The magnificent landscape deeply affected Wordsworth's imagination and gave him a love of nature. He lost his mother when he was eight and five years later he also lost his father. The domestic problems separated Wordsworth from his beloved and neurotic sister Dorothy, who was a very important person in his life. Dorothy had a special connection to nature. She provided Wordsworth with a valuable source of thoughts and impressions for which he was usually given full credit.

Wordsworth’s Arguments Against the Kendal and Windemere Railway In 1844, the proposed Kendal and Windermere rail line threatened to violate William Wordsworth's precious lakes district. He responded with a literary campaign against the line. Wordsworth wrote poems and letters that were published in the Morning Post to gain the support of the public and specifically address the members of the Board of Trade and the House of Commons. In his letters, Wordsworth is:
Clearly representing a minority, he speaks with both a sense of his argument’s limited popular authority, overriding sense of it’s rightness notwithstanding, and a desire to extend this authority as possible into the public sphere” ( Mulvihill In his first letter to the Morning Post published on October 16, 1844, Wordsworth first claimed that there was no need for a rail in close proximity to the Lakes district. He stated that there were no manufacturers, quarries nor a substantial agriculture base to warrant the intrusion. After refuting the need, Wordsworth turned on the main argument for introducing rails into the district:
The projectors have induced many to favor their schemes by declaring that one of their main objects is to place the beauties of the Lake District within easier reach of these who cannot afford to pay for ordinary conveyances ( Mulvihill Wordsworth understands that the corporate faction need only to prove the utility of a rail for it to be taken seriously, he writes “Utilitarianism, serving as a mask for cupidity and gambling speculations” (

[Lines left upon a Seat in a Yew-tree] Most of the characters who appear in the poetry of William Wordsworth (1770-1850) are solitary in some way; there are none who appear to be the sociable type which can be found in the poems of other Romantic poets, such as Byron's Don Juan , and Childe Harolde . The reason for this is perhaps that Wordsworth himself was quite a solitary person; although he appeared to enjoy the company of a select few, for example his beloved sister Dorothy, he seemed to be happiest when he had only Nature for company. Wordsworth's preference for his own company seems to have been a characteristic which began in early childhood. In his writings about childhood experiences in

GCSE Books when the light of sense Goes out in flashes that have shewn to us The invisible world William Wordsworth (1770-1850) completed two main versions of his autobiographical epic poem The Prelude , the original version in 1805, and a revised version which was published in 1850. The 1805 version is the one usually studied, and usually considered the better of the two, being more melodic and spontaneous than the more laboured version of 1850. In this essay I shall be discussing the 1805 version, with one or two references to differences in the 1850 version. The Prelude - as indicated in its subtitle - to chart the 'growth of a poet's mind', with particular emphasis on the importance of nature, which is always at the heart of Wordsworth's philosophy and poetry. The book starts by picking up the narrative which was left off at the end of book lV, 'Summer Vacation', in which Wordsworth recounts a spiritual turning point in his life. I made no vows, but vows

Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind; In the primal sympathy Which having been must ever be; In the soothing thoughts that spring Out of human suffering; In the faith that looks through death, In years that bring the philosophic mind. An Evening Walk and Descriptive Sketches . While living in France, Wordsworth conceived a daughter, Caroline, out of wedlock; he left France, however, before she was born. In 1802, he returned to France with his sister on a four-week visit to meet Caroline. Later that year, he married Mary Hutchinson, a childhood friend, and they had five children together. In 1812, while living in Grasmere, they grieved the loss of two of their children, Catherine and John, who both died that year. Equally important in the poetic life of Wordsworth was his 1795 meeting with the poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge . It was with Coleridge that Wordsworth published the famous Lyrical Ballads in 1798. While the poems themselves are some of the most influential in Western literature, it is the preface to the second edition that remains one of the most important testaments to a poet's views on both his craft and his place in the world. In the preface Wordsworth writes on the need for "common speech" within poems and argues against the hierarchy of the period which valued epic poetry above the lyric.
