  • ASIN: Book Description DON'T STOP THE CARNIVAL is Herman Wouk's comedy about living out your fantasies on an exotic Caribbean island. Norman Paperman, a successful Broadway publicity agent, has long dreamed of escaping his high-pressure Manhattan life. In a fit of bravado, he chucks it all and buys an old hotel on tiny, primitive, lush Amerigo island. Customer Reviews: More suspenseful than I'd expected I finally got around to reading this after years of listening to the Jimmy Buffett musical (which, contrary to what some earlier reviewers seem to think, already exists). I therefore already knew how the story ended, but with a hundred or so pages left to go I was involved enough to hope they'd changed it from the book. No dice, unfortunately, but it's still a far more engaging story than I was expecting. If you're wondering - as I was - how a story of a guy who buys a hotel could possibly be entertaining, don't worry. I don't know quite how Wouk did it, but he did. The sequence of events sometimes does seem a bit Hollywood-ish, in the sense that you think things can't possibly get any worse for Norman Paperman and friends, but oh look, they just did. For that matter, they sometimes also get better faster than you'd ever expect in real life. Still, the story does draw you in and make you root for Norman to tough it out regardless of what the island and its cast of loony characters throw at him next. Speaking of which, Wouk is a genius when it comes to original yet strangely convincing characters. Even if the action dragged (which it doesn't), the book would be a fun read for them alone.

Incompetent proofreading in the Kindle Edition Comments I appreciated the historical information and the presentation of characters in the novel to bring the story which needed to be told. I was in high school during that period and really enjoyed the TV series and have just completed looking at it again plus reading the books for both Winds of War and War and Remembrance. The DVD series was excellent and was enhanced by the two books.

      by Herman Wouk
(Doubleday, 1952) Reviewed by Sue Feder When first published in 1952, City Boy sank without a trace because, the publisher said, no novel with Jewish characters could sell. It was made into a movie which changed a Jewish boy from the Bronx to a thin Irish girl to a small Midwestern town. It, too, sank without a trace. Several years, a hit book ( The Caine Mutiny ), and a new publisher later, the book was reissued, and reissued, and translated, and lauded, and reissued. It’s not currently in print has not been so since about 1986 and poorer is the world for it. Herbie Bookbinder is the boy, age eleven or thereabouts in 1929. He’s fat, awkward, socially inept, but very, very bright think nerd, think...Bill Gates, New York Jewish-style. Herbie’s story is told in the language of a child, but the voice of the adult looking back and over with affection, wistfulness, and belly laughs. City Boy is the story of Herbie's summer, the girl he loves, and the boys he hates. Forced to spend the summer in a sleepaway camp in the Catskills, Herbie's athletically deficient, academically overachieving normal self is not exactly designed to fit in with team sports. He spends most of his time hiding, reading, and trying to figure out a way to see the young miss he has a desperate crush on, and who is in the nearby but forbidden girl's camp.

Herman Wouk (1915-) American bestseller writer who has dealt in his work with moral dilemmas and the Jewish experience. Wouk's epic war novels have been tremendously popular. Several of them have been filmed, including The Caine Mutiny (1951). Wouk's two-volume historical novel set in World War II, T he Winds of War (1971) and War and Remembrance (1978), was also very successful as a television mini-series. This large novel could be called an American War and Peace , which set individual values, actions, and fates against a panoramic, all-embracing picture of the world. "Rhoda asked questions about the Jews, as Pug Henry mixed more martinis. Tollever assured her that the newspaper stories were exaggerated. The worst thing had been the so-called Crystal Night when Nazi toughs had smashed department store windows and set fire to some synagogues. Even that the Jews had brought on themselves, by murdering a German embassy official in Paris. As an embassy official himself, Tollever said, he took rather a dim view of that!" (from The Winds of War Herman Wouk was born in New York into a family of Jewish immigrants from Russia. He entered Columbia University, New York where he studied philosophy and comparative literature, and edited the college humor magazine, the
