For several years I searched and finally found an old paperback copy. It's great to see that it is being reprinted. I believe the people who do not like this book either read it at the wrong time in their life (at a time when they are not open to new ideas) or did not understand the times in which it was written (1941). I heartily recommend the book to anyone who wants to think about relationships in a unique way. Islandia, by Austin Tappan Wright The greatest underground novel for Americans. Especially appropriate for our times, when American foreign policy is based primarily on military threats or actions, commercial considerations trump concern with protection of the environment, and ignorance of or disdain for other cultures and peoples and our own history is the national norm. snore...snore...

    Austin Tappan Wright
Buccaneer Books 1942 A book review by Danny Yee Studying at Harvard, John Lang meets and befriends Dorn, a student from the far-off country of Islandia, where Lang is later appointed United States consul. Islandia is struggling to decide on a political response to the imperialist powers, and Lang becomes involved in the conflict. He also becomes involved at a more personal level, and must struggle to come to terms with Islandia's differences. Islandia , and it is as an adventure and above all as a romance that it shines. Islandia's most intriguing differences are in the workings of personal relationships, of friendship and love, and it is Lang's relationships with women, Islandian and American, which provide the central threads of the novel. (There are three words for love in Islandian: alia , roughly love of place and lineage, ania , commitment and desire for marriage, and apia , sexual attraction.) Islandia is a gentle but haunting novel, an uplifting and captivating story whose thousand pages pass by all too rapidly. It appears to have had a small but appreciative readership for fifty years, but it deserves to be far more widely known. While it will never be as popular as Lord of the Rings , it is a classic that will be remembered and read when myriad legions of fantasy and romance novels in gaudy covers have sunk into obscurity.

    Biography
Austin Tappan Wright was born on 20 August, 1883 in Hanover, New Hampshire to John Henry Wright (Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University) and Mary Tappan Wright (a novelist). He was educated at Harvard College (1905), and Harvard Law School (1908), where he edited the Harvard Law Review and graduated cum laude . He married Margaret Garrad Stone and had four children, William Austin, Sylvia, Phyllis, Benjamin Tappan. After serving in the Boston law firm of Louis Brandeis, Wright took faculty positions at the University of California law school at Berkeley (1916-1924) and the University of Pennsylvania law school (1924-1931). He died on 18 September, 1931 in a car accident.
    Islandia
Islandia in 1942, eleven years after Wright's death. The book sold approximately 30,000 copies. In the novel, a pre-industrial civilization confronts early twentieth century colonialism in a struggle to reconcile their happily unadorned culture with the excesses of modern technology. The protagonist, John Lang, attempts to mediate this culture clash as a United States consul - but gradually comes to appreciate Islandian life. Eventually, he brings his New England bride to the Island and rejects American culture altogether. Despite some elements of Islandia which contain a distressingly racist tinge, the novel's progressive attitude towards the state of women in Wright's time (and our own) made this novel a classic in utopian literature.

Badcompany May 3rd, 2010, 01:18 AM I just read acicdental time machine and I was wondering if there are oher books like it with the premise of someone from our society getting introduced to different civilizations. owlcroft May 3rd, 2010, 04:27 AM On a humorous note, there is poor Arthur Dent in Douglas Adams' classic "Hitchhiker's Guide" series. A serious go is A. A. Attanasio's "Radix" tetrad. I have assumed you meant novels in which a contemporary human meets a good number of diverse civilizations, at least some non-human. If the restrictions are loosersay, including a human from our future, or a selection of civilizations all human, or just one or two alien civilizations, and so onthe field expands. Fantastic Fiction Authors W Austin Wright ... Awards Islandia A novel by Austin Wright Reading ISLANDIA is like visiting another country, one I would love to visit and might even consider living in. The world-building of Austin Tappan Wright drew me in and kept me entranced for 1000 pages. This is one of the very few novels that I revisit and reread, one of the few I've gone out looking for in a first edition. The characters are complex and endearing. The style is leisurely. There really is a plot, honest. But the book doesn't depend on the plot. It depends on the exploration of a different society and the interactions of its people with a young and naive American. Vonda N McIntyre On his death, Austin Tappan Wright left the world a wholly unsuspected legacy. Among this distinguished legal scholar's papers were thousands of pages devoted to a staggering feat of literary creation - a detailed history of an imagined country complete with geography, genealogy, representations from its literature, language and culture. In a monumental labor of love Wright's wife and daughter culled from this material a thousand page novel, as detailed as J R R Tolkien 's Middle-earth. Islandia has similarly become a classic touchstone for those concerned with the creation of imaginary worlds.
