Richard Wright
author of strange, dark fictions
Welcome:
Welcome to the site. I'm a scribbler of horror and other dark fictions, and my novels and stories have been published in the UK and the US for the last fifteen years. I currently live in India, having been in Scotland for over a decade. For most of that time I've been writing one thing or another. Hopefully some of it has entertained you, or soon will. Let me know.
Kudos:
"In a genre where some of the most respected voices can't seem to get past vampires and serial killers, Wright doles out startlingly original ideas like he's throwing stones. More importantly, he's knocking us upside the head with them and making us think in a very enjoyable way." Louis Maistros, Chiaroscuro

Description
Richard Wright grew up in the woods of Mississippi, with poverty, hunger, fear, and hatred. He lied, stole, and raged at those around him; at six he was a "drunkard," hanging about taverns. Surly, brutal, cold, suspicious, and self-pitying, he was surrounded on one side by whites who were either indifferent to him, pitying, or cruel, and on the other by blacks who resented anyone trying to rise above the common lot. Black Boy is Richard Wright's powerful account of his journey from innocence to experience in the Jim Crow South. It is at once an unashamed confession and a profound indictment—a poignant and disturbing record of social injustice and human suffering.

    Richard Wright
Born on a plantation near Natchez, Mississippi, Richard Wright spent much of his childhood in an orphanage or with various relatives. Moving to Chicago in 1934, he worked unskilled jobs before joining the Federal Writer's Project. As his politics became radical, he wrote poetry for leftist publications and in 1938, published his first book, Uncle Tom's Children: Four Novellas . His novel Native Son (1940) made him famous. After World War II, Wright lived as an expatriate in Paris, where he wrote his autobiography, Black Boy (1945), a book that celebrates African-American resilience and courage much as nineteenth-century slave narratives do. In this excerpt from Black Boy , Wright tells how he found a way to pursue his thirst for learning and information.
