From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search This article has multiple issues. Please help improve it or discuss these issues on the talk page ACF is one of the major formats of collegiate quizbowl. The name refers to two related things:
  • The actual organization, founded as the Academic Competition Foundation in 1991, which changed its name to the Academic Competition Federation in 1997 and presently continues to run a national championship for collegiate quizbowl as well as other tournaments. The format, designed by Robert Meredith and adopted by the ACF organization for its official tournaments, which has become used at almost all collegiate tournaments and many high school tournaments, which are otherwise not connected to the ACF organization.

    • Odyssey of the Mind (Outside Source) is a competitive program that encourages students to solve challenges creatively and to the best that they can be. They learn from and even cheer on their competitors. Odyssey of the Mind is not a competition about knowledge; instead, it focuses on how students work in teams to apply their knowledge, skills, and talents. California Academic Decathlon (Outside Source) is designed for teams of high school students. However, teachers who want to encourage highly motivated students to prepare for high school can develop programs that mimic the California Academic Decathlon.

There are several leagues in West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina, although many of the Virginia leagues have become feeders for Virginia High School League Scholastic Bowl competition, or play the VHSL format instead of the ACE format. (The Scholastic Bowl format allows districts to keep playing their old formats during the regular season.) ACE teams also exist throughout Arkansas, though the game follows a slightly different format. Most quizbowl formats feature teams of three to five players from each school, competing on questions that span the realm on human knowledge. There are rarely pre-assigned reading lists, or limitations on subject matter. Informal limits, based on what students might reasonably be taught, or have learned in outside reading, do exist, and some competitions will restrict the amount of

Dartmouth College Bowl participates in quiz bowl events within the New England region against top-caliber teams such as Harvard, Brown, MIT, Williams, Princeton, Yale and Rutgers. 4/15/07- NAQT ICT Results Dartmouth teams participated in the NAQT ICT last weekend. The A team came in second place in Division II, while the B team came in 21th place. Congratulations to both teams, and to Dominic Machado, who received an individual scoring award. 2/21/07- NAQT ICT Congratulations to the two Dartmouth teams, which qualified for the Division II bracket at the 2007 NAQT ICT 2/17/07- February News Thanks to the hard work of Austin Zheng, we have updated the website for the first time in a couple years. We just finished 3 tournaments the last three weekends. At the MLK Mirror on February 3rd at Boston University, Dartmouth A (Robert, Randall, AJ and Dominic) finished 5th out of 9 with a record of 4-4 (including a forfeit due to travel-related issues) and Dartmouth B (Luofei, Austin, Alan, Ashley and Jason) finished 8th out of 9 with a 1-7 record. At NAQT Sectionals , the following weekend at Harvard, the A team (Aravind, Randall, AJ and Dominic) won the Round Robin going 9-1 and finished second overall out of 11 teams after the playoffs with an 11-2 record. The B team (Ashley, Austin, Kevin and Robert) went 7-5, including handing the Dartmouth A their only loss during the round robin. Dartmouth Bs Austin had the highlight of the tournament powering 4 consecutive questions, including one after going to the bathroom at halftime.

It is very important in your earliest years to learn about the most highly respected and prestigious award competitions that are available to you. Please read all of the descriptions below, and visit the websites to learn more. We at UC Merced are eager to provide advising and assistance with preparation for these competitions. Students who win these awards:
  • Are hard-working, creative students with top grades (usually 3.9 and above, although there are exceptions); Have interests in campus or community activities and career fields or academic disciplines that naturally align with the aims of the scholarship program; Begin work to position themselves competitively in their FIRST YEAR of college or prior, even if they cannot apply until the senior year.
  • If you would like to compete for these awards in the years to come, please visit the Student Advising and Learning Center to speak with Dr. Elizabeth Boretz learning@ucmerced.edu Plan to have an educational or service experience abroad, too, as part of your college education. All of these competitions demand years of dedication to making the most of your college experience.
