Method acting
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search This article needs additional citations for verification

Unsourced material may be challenged and removed (December 2008) Method acting is a phrase that loosely refers to a family of techniques by which actors try to create in themselves the thoughts and emotions of their characters in an effort to develop lifelike performances. It can be contrasted with more classical forms of acting , in which actors simulate thoughts and emotions through external means, such as vocal intonation or facial expression. Though not all Method actors use the same approach, the "method" in Method acting usually refers to the practice, advocated by Lee Strasberg , by which actors draw upon their own emotions and memories in their portrayals, aided by a set of exercises and practices including sense memory and affective memory Method actors are often characterized as immersing themselves in their characters to the extent that they continue to portray them even offstage or off-camera for the duration of a project. However, this is a popular misconception. While some actors have employed this approach, it is generally not taught as part of the Method. Method acting has been described as "revolutionizing American theater ." While classical acting instruction "had focused on developing external talents," the Method was "the first systematized training that also developed internal abilities (sensory, psychological, emotional)."

"Professional" Acting Technique
I'm often asked about acting techniques. Which is best. Which do most actors use. That sort of thing. As most of you know, I don't generally talk about the craft of acting but, rather, the craft of success. However, I do have some observations about what it takes to be considered a good actor. And the type of actor who seems to build a career effortlessly. About nine years ago I had the distinct privilege of writing a half-hour comedy pilot for HBO. The cast was an amazing group of actors: David Huddleston, Jack Elam, Harry Morgan, John Hillerman, Wilford Brimley, and Paul Williams. (Look them up on IMDb and be amazed at the length of their resumes)

Acting Techniques
Do you see yourself performing in motion pictures or in one of the Broadway shows? Then you need to learn some acting techniques in order to be considered as a good actor. The acting business is not as easy as it may seem. There are thousands of struggling actors across the country who wish to try their luck in movies and stage shows. But before anyone can get to the point of giving auditions for anything, it is basic knowledge that one should know the "ins and outs" of this industry. As there are various genres of acting, getting into each character, learning the lines, connecting with the audience, bringing every emotion of the character out with dialogs and mannerisms is what helps you advance further. Read more on acting tips
Acting Methods and Techniques
The acting techniques for actors mentioned below can be useful if you are taking any acting classes, going for an audition, or impressing any casting director(s). Let's take a look at three genres, comedy, drama, and horror, and see what different acting techniques are expected from its performers. Read more on acting exercises
Comedy Genre
There are many subcategories in the comedy genre: farce, imbroglio, black comedy, pantomime, and many more. It may seem easier on television or stage, but comedy is tough work. The key element of a comedic acting style is not that you "milk the audience" for a laugh. The script might be really hilarious to work from, but if you act out the scenes as if the will come automatically without your input, you are definitely going to kill the essence of comedy, spontaneity. Just so you don't give the joke away before time, an actor has to stay focused on each and every moment which unfolds during the scenes. The humor has to be seen and heard together.

Acting Techniques for Monologues
I think acting monologues is harder than acting scenes. Why? Because my own acting technique relies heavily on getting feedback from my scene partner. But in a monologue, you have no scene partner. You have to imagine them. Luckily, we humans were blessed with vast imagination. Without it, we wouldn't have thought of books, the wheel, or story-telling. And actors are story-tellers. (Here are some acting exercises to get the juices flowing.)
Acting Techniques for Cold Readings
Sometimes, especially auditions for film or TV, you'll be asked to do a cold reading. They will give you a script and expect you to do it right then. Ninety percent of the time, you'll get a few minutes on your own to read it over. These few minutes are extremely important. Spend them wisely.

Acting Techniques Written by Stacy Chbosky There are dozens of different acting techniques, ranging from common sense to the fantastically weird. Some acting techniques are rooted in the body, while others are rooted in the voice, while still others are rooted in the text analysis and written word. There are acting classes for learning dialects, sword fighting, mask work, mime, clowning, and improvisation. There are Los Angeles acting schools and New York acting schools for just about every weird sect and bizarre sliver of theater imaginable. Although each class teaches something remarkably different, they all usually lead to the same thing. All acting techniques are fundamentally designed to help the actor make better choices in how to play the role, and greater freedom, flexibility and specificity bringing those choices to life.
Acting Techniques and Scene Study
Perhaps the simplest and best way to work on technique is to work on scene. You can spend hours learning how to speak in a Yiddish accent or mime the tying of a shoe lace, but unless you can apply those skills to scene work, they aren't worth much. That's because the scene is the skeleton for all acting.
