Immobilise and reassure victim, who must lie down and be kept as quiet as possible. Apply pressure bandage immediately, see First-aid procedure; immobilise limb with a splint to reduce spread of venom. Loosen, but do not remove bandage if there is severe swelling. Take victim to hospital as soon as possible.
Distribution
Habits
A slow-moving, bad-tempered and excitable snake that may hiss or puff when disturbed. When annoyed, it strikes vigorously in all directions and has the capability of a lightning-fast sideways strike without withdrawing the head. Fortunately it often gives warning of its intentions by hissing noisily. It relies on its perfect camouflage to escape detection and will rather freeze than move off. Moves in caterpillar fashion leaving straight deep track in the sand. Puff adders make splendid rat-traps.

24. Puff Adder
Puff Adder African Pit Viper Rattlesnake Tropical RainForest Adventures Sevierville TN Tennessee Pigeon Forge Gatlinburg
http://www.rfadventures.com/puff_adder.htm
Range: Africa, south of the Sahara. Largest geographical range of any of the adders. Habitat: Terrestrial animal found in varied dry habitats Natural Diet: Small mammals, occasional ground dwelling birds. Diet at Rain Forest: Pre-killed rodents Size: 3-5 feet, very heavy bodied Rain Forest Facts: There are currently two recognized species of the Puff Adder, differing in the construction of the scales. The animal is generally found in very stable numbers in sub-Saharan Africa. The Puff Adder is absent from high humidity environments such as those found on the west coast of Africa in the RainForest regions of the Congo. Noted for having some of the most virulent hemotoxic venom of any snake, the Puff Adder can deliver large volumes of strong venom into deep bites with it's exceptionally long fangs. The bite of this creature to the native peoples of Africa is a very serious issue. The skull and fang structure of this and other vipers is remarkable. The large fangs in the front of the skull act as hypodermic needles delivering large amounts of venom deep into the bite wound.

Two Snakes
By William T. Hathaway Here are two secretive creatures that may scare you out of your wits, come late spring. These reptiles are not aware of their supernatural powers to affect those of us who are well ensconced in the knowledge of devilish apparitions. There may be less harm to the snakes when an occasional two-legged animal, with an intelligent understanding of nature's serpents, happens by. (See also other snakes

New York state is home to 17 species of snakes. These animals, whose tubular, limbless bodies are instantly and universally recognized, produce mixed reactions among people, from fear to fascination. Serpents figure prominently in the mythologies of nearly all human cultures; however, only in Christian religions are they a symbol of evil and temptation. It is perhaps for this reason that snakes often are persecuted and killed without any understanding of their true nature. Snakes play critical roles in the environments where they occur, primarily by the position they hold in food webs in natural communities. Many snakes are top level predators; for example, a single rat snake can consume over 100 rodents a year. common garter snake Other snakes are important in the control they exert on insect and other invertebrate populations. All snakes form part of the diet of other predators such as hawks and foxes and thereby serve to link higher and lower feeding levels. Common Snakes of New York The most widespread and frequently encountered snakes in New York state are the garter snake and the water snake. Garter snakes use a wide variety of habitats, from woodlands to marshes to fields and exist quite well around human habitations. These snakes, like many other species, are variable in color and pattern; the basic color is dark brown or green with three yellowish stripes down their sides and back. They may reach lengths of two feet, but are typically smaller. They are completely harmless to people.

Within this family are the most deadly snakes in the world, including, Cobras ( Naja spp.), Coral Snakes ( Micruroides ), and Mambas (e.g. Dendroaspis ). It is only within the Australian continent that this family dominates the snake fauna. Elsewhere in the world, Colubrids are the dominant snakes. Convergent evolution in the Australian elapidae, when compared to snakes in other places is obvious. Small innocuous lizard eating species such as Whip snakes ( e.g. Genera Demansia, Unechis

Berg or Mountain Adder
Length 40 - 50 cm average; 60 cm maximum Description This is the most common poisonous snake in the Natal Drakensberg and is found on rocky mountain slopes at all altitudes, even the escarpment. It has a relatively narrower, longer head than the Puff Adder, is more lightly built, and has a much more patterned appearance, this consisting of two longitudinal light bands between which lie two wavy patterns joined at the middle. Below the longitudinal bands are some pale spots. The Berg Adders most commonly encountered are nowhere near the above lengths - 10 to 20 cm is a much more representative size. These younger snakes are dark grey to black, with light grey patterning. The rarer, larger adults may be dark brown with yellow / fawn patterning, and can become fat enough to be mistaken for a Puff Adder although the two species are very differently patterned. The Berg Adder is responsible for the most bites amongst hikers and climbers, since it is in the habit of sunning itself on small rock ledges as well as paths. Many of the recorded bites have been to the hands and fingers, inflicted as hikers and climbers have attempted to clamber up steep slopes using ledges as hand-holds. It is a very irritable snake and is easily provoked into biting, although it prefers to escape from danger while making a loud hissing noise. Very small specimens hiss with such considerable vigour that their whole body vibrates, and it sounds like they are squeaking.
