Overview Information Posts Table of contents Next Definition Addison's disease is a disorder that occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough of their hormones. Alternative Names Adrenocortical hypofunction; Chronic adrenocortical insufficiency; Primary adrenal insufficiency Causes, incidence, and risk factors The adrenal glands are small hormone-secreting organs located on top of each kidney. They consist of the outer portion (called the cortex) and the inner portion (called the medulla). The cortex produces 3 types of hormones:
  • The glucocorticoid hormones (such as cortisol) maintain sugar (glucose) control, decrease (suppress) immune response , and help the body respond to stress. The mineralocorticoid hormones (such as aldosterone) regulate sodium and potassium balance. The sex hormones, androgens (male) and estrogens (female) affect sexual development and sex drive.
Addison's disease results from damage to the adrenal cortex. The damage causes the cortex to produce less of its hormones.

Addison's disease , also known as chronic adrenal insufficiency , or hypocortisolism, is a rare endocrine and hormonal disorder. It occurs when abnormally low quantities of all the adrenal steroid hormones are produced by the adrenal gland . Addison's disease usually follows the autoimmune destruction of the adrenal cortex (outer layer of the adrenal gland), in which the immune system creates antibodies against the body's own tissues. The adrenal glands, seated above the kidneys , fail to produce enough of the hormone cortisol and, sometimes, the hormone aldosterone. In Addison's disease, the complex coordination of the human body and endocrine system is broken down, but may not be noticed until the presence of a physically stressful situation. Thus Addison's disease highlights the normally complex and harmonious coordination of the human body and endocrine system. Stress on the body from another disease, such as tuberculosis, cancer , or AIDS , impacts the output of hormones from the adrenal glands, manifesting in Addison's disease. Or the autoimmune system, which normally protects the body against disease, can turn against the adrenal cortex, manifesting this disease. The disruption of one bodily function thus results in a cascading effect of symptoms.

ADDISON'S DISEASE, a constitutional affection manifesting itself in an exaggeration of the normal pigment of the skin, asthenia, irritability of the gastro-intestinal tract, and weakness and irregularity of the heart's action: these symptoms being due to loss of function of the suprarenal glands. It is important to note, however, that Addison's Disease may occur without pigmentation, and pigmentation without Addison's Disease. The condition was first recognized by Dr Thomas Addison of Guy's Hospital , who in 1855 published an important work on The Constitutional and Local Ef f ects of Diseases of the Suprarenal Capsules. Sir Samuel Wilks worked zealously in obtaining re cognition for these observations in England , and Brown-Sequard in France was stimulated by this paper to ,investigate the

January 2008 22:57:28 HOME ADDISON'S INFORMATION What is Addison's disease? By: Sarah J. Baker Wednesday, 04. December 2002 Addison’s disease is a rare, chronic condition brought about by the failure of the adrenal glands. Lifelong, continuous treatment with steroid replacement therapy is required. With the right balance of daily medication, most people with the disease are able to continue life much as it was before their illness. Adrenal function The normal adrenal cortex has an enormous functional reserve. This is called upon by the body especially in times of intense stress, such as surgery, trauma or serious infection. One of the most significant consequences of Addison’s disease is, therefore, the body’s failure to adapt to such stresses and, in the absence of adequate steroid cover, this may result in a state of shock, known as an Addisonian crisis, which is a medical emergency.

zSB(3,3) Addison's disease is a disorder of the adrenal glands. These two glands are located above each kidney. The outer layers of the glands produce cortisol and aldosterone, two of the body's essential hormones (chemicals). The gradual destruction of those outer layers during the disease causes less and less of those hormones to be produced, with serious effects resulting in the body. What causes it?
Most cases of Addison's disease (about 70%) are caused by an autoimmune disorder, in which the body's antibodies attack healthy tissues. Other, more rare, causes of destruction of the adrenal glands may be:
    • Tuberculosis (about 20% of cases)
    • Chronic infections, such as fungal infections

She gets a shot of percoten once a month and is doing very well. The cost of her shot has just gone up to $115.00 a month. Is there any way I can get this medication on my own and administer it? I am disabled and the expense is getting to be a real problem for me. The idea of putting her down is very disturbing to me especially since she has done so well with the treatment. Thank you, Irene Answer : Irene- It may be a lot less expensive to treat with fludrocortisone IF you are willing to use a compounding pharmacy to obtain the medication and can afford to pay for some additional testing early on to make sure it works OK for your dog (monitoring potassium and sodium for a few weeks). There have been reports of compounded fludrocortisone not working as well but it is a lot less expensive and it appears to work for many dogs. You might ask your vet to check into this option for you, especially since the lower long term cost seems potentially critical to your Dalmatian's survival in your situation. I do not know of any way that you could obtain Percorten-V legally for administration yourself in the U.S. Florinef (Rx), the brand name version of fludrocortisone is usually more expensive than Percorten-V for large dogs so it is unlikely that a change from one brand name to the other will be helpful.

Addison's Disease: Overview Addison's disease is a severe or total deficiency of the hormones made in the adrenal cortex , caused by a destruction of the adrenal cortex. It is a rare hormonal disorder that affects about one in 100,000 people. It occurs when the adrenal glands , located above each kidney , do not produce enough corticosteroids - in particular, the hormone cortisol , and in some cases, the hormone aldosterone There are normally two adrenal glands , one located above each kidney . The adrenal glands are in fact two endocrine (ductless, or hormone-producing) glands in one. The inner part of the adrenal (the 'medulla') produces epinephrine (also called adrenaline ) which is produced at times of stress and helps the body respond to "fight or flight" situations by raising the pulse rate, adjusting blood flow, and raising blood sugar. However, the absence of the adrenal medulla and epinephrine does not cause disease.
