This page is dedicated to native adoptees and foster children - past, present and future.
In the fifties and sixties many native children were adopted into non-native homes or were taken into foster care. Patrick Johnston in his study Native Children and the Child Welfare System coined the phrase "Sixties Scoop" to describe this phenomenon. I was one of those children. That's me on the left, in the earliest picture I have of myself. I have been fortunate to reunite with two of my sisters. We are still looking for our brother. Our mother passed away many years ago. I grew up thinking I was an oddity and didn't realize until many years later that there were many others like me. Many paths, many stories
All of our stories are unique. Some of us are aware of our tribal affiliations, others have no way of ever finding out. Some are driven by the search for kin, others are not. Some of us have met blood relatives, others will never know their natural kin. Some were raised in positive environments, others were not so fortunate. You can read some of their stories on the Articles page. Please visit the

Experts estimate that while only 2 percent of American children are adopted, they make up one-third of the teens in therapy. Residential programs that specialize in addressing anger, control, trust, and abandonment issues can help teens work through the complex questions surrounding their adoption, and instill the coping skills they need to mature into healthy adults.

Adoption Issues by Marlou Russell,Ph.D. In the old days, adoption was considered an unspeakable family secret that was shrouded in shame. Today prospective parents advertise with 800 numbers, pregnant women use the internet to place their babies up for adoption, and adoptees have a support group called Bastard Nation. Despite this apparent openness in adoption, there is still a great need for adoption issues to be addressed. Emotional Issues The adoption triad consists of the adoptee, the birth parents, and the adoptive parent or parents. All three are necessary and forever connected, whether or not they ever meet. The emotional issues that occur at the time of an adoption will continue to resurface and weave their way through a triad member's life. Seemingly simple questions can trigger the adoption-related feelings. A birth mother is asked how many kids she has...A physician asks an adoptee if cancer runs in the family...a parent is asked why the two children look so different. Adoption has lifelong impact for each triad member. In therapy the most common issues are feelings of lack of control, shame and embarrassment, rejection and abandonment, identity and roles, secrecy and honesty. Loss is an inevitable part of adoption. The structure of adoption is such that to create an adoptive family, a birth family must be separated and adoptees lose their biological ties.

      Adoption Issues
For those who have experienced adoption in some way in their lives it is a tremendously personal and at times difficult issue to reconcile with oneself. For birthparents, adoptees, and for adoptive parents the issues and feelings that arise are varied and difficult to encapsulate within a simple theory or manner of dealing with these challenges. The Adoption group at Logan River Academy focuses on the most salient issues associated with adoption including feelings of abandonment, issues with self esteem, knowing oneself more fully, options for finding more information on birth parents, feelings of anger and resentment toward birth parents as well as adoptive parents, behavioral problems associated with these feelings, and dealing effectively with the unique experience of each adopted child. The adoption group is comprised of students with varied adoption experiences and typically has anywhere from 7 to 14 students. Some of our students genuinely struggle with many issues that can be linked to some degree to their adoption, while others in the group have quite effectively dealt with the challenges associated with their adoption and can offer support and advice for those who are struggling. One student in the group explained their issues as follows: “My adoption means a few things to me. It means that somebody loves me and cares about my future. It means that I have more opportunities in life now and that I shouldn’t feel sorry for myself.” Another student noted, “My adoption plays a big role in my life. Logan River Academy’s adoption group has taught me that I can still be a great and wonderful person despite my adoption. I identified feelings of abandonment and if it weren’t for the group and support I got I wouldn’t have been able to handle it as maturely as I do today. I want to pursue finding my birthparents and learn more about my adoption.” While each student’s experience and manner of dealing with their adoption is unique the group is an effective way for students to discuss in a safe and open forum their personal thoughts and feelings about their own adoption story.

JCICS issues position statement on I-600A renewals
Joint Council and others in our field have great concern regarding the one-time renewal of I-600A approvals and the impact on Potential Adoptive Parents (PAPs). It is very clear that the authors of the Intercountry Adoption Act of 2000 intended to ‘grandfather’ all I-600A petitions filed prior to the date on which the Hague Convention went into force in the United States (April 1, 2007). At the time the legislation was drafted, the authors did not foresee the lengthy processing time now associated with adoptions from countries such as China and Haiti.
