Adoption Issues - international vs local adoption
Expert: Terrie Question After several years of infertility - we are now thinking about adopting. Do you recommend international over US adoption? My biggest fear of local adoption is the birth mother changing her mind and creating a heartache for us. Also, I worry about the child's emotional stability later in life knowing he/she has been given up. Can you please help me. Thanks.

Photo used with permission from Deborah Wald zSB(3,3) www.theTaskForce.org.) Gay adoptions are complex, and laws vary from state to state. It is critical that any same-sex couple looking to adopt a child be represented by a lawyer who is familiar and up-to-date with the latest issues. Here are some tips on how to find such a lawyer:
  • Research - Give yourself enough time to do research. Contact friends to see if they have had good experiences with attorneys in cases similar to yours. Check with any local LGBT organizations, and with national organizations such as the National Center for Lesbian Rights , the ACLU or Lambda Legal . These organizations have referral lists of attorneys in your area who have handled these types of cases before, and who will understand the particular complexities of your case. Keep in mind that the most experienced adoption attorneys in your area may never have handled a same-sex adoption, although they may be willing to do so. Contact - Once you have a list of possible attorneys, contact them. Prepare a list of questions to ask them which will help you determine their knowledge, experience, and comfort with LGBT people and adoptions.

    Adoption Issues
Adoption is such a broad concept and is one of the most important decisions to make. Although legal, a lot of things are attached to it that each and every adopting parent should consider. Issues and controversies, in fact, surround it, making adoption really a very important move to take.
Speaking of issues, couples and families who are wishing to adopt have a lot of adoption issues to take into consideration as they approach the process. Some of the most common issues are mentioned below, so please read on.
    Issue on Infertility
Perhaps one of the most common adoption issues has something to do with infertility. I bet you all know that most of those couples who used to consider adoption are infertile. Well, most of the adoption issues regarding infertility usually address the adopting parents’ feeling that they are not the real parents of the child, their worries about the known and unknown genetic or biological influences to the child, as well as the relations with the birthparents of the child they are rearing. All of these worries happen as the child grows old.
    Child’s Health and Development Issue
Numerous studies have been conducted to determine the effect of adoption to the health and growth of the child, but most of those studies have revealed that adoption affect greatly the development of the adopted children when they get older. Specific adoption issues such as separation, loss, anger, identity and grief may arise, and some of these adoption issues may appear in all the stages of the child’s development, thus it is very vital for the adopting parents to know and understand how their child behaves and why they behave that way. Parents should then be supportive to their child’s needs and must help their child grow up knowing that she is taken care of and loved. As what most experts have said, the environment that the child belongs greatly affects his or her development.

What are some of the adoption issues teenagers face? While it is difficult to make a general statement about such a diverse group as adopted teenagers, it can be said that adopted persons generally lead normal healthy lives that are no different from the lives of non- adopted persons. They may; however have experiences that are unique to being adopted, and these issues may have an impact on their lives at varying times. The teen years can be stressful for anyone, but they may be particularly stressful for an adopted teen because of the issues that must be faced during this period of development. The two most common are loss and unresolved grief and identity and self-esteem. Dealing with the loss of the birth family, coupled with a search for self, are two processes that can contribute to shaping the psychological development of adopted persons.

Adoption Issues with your teen or adolescent?
Adoption issues have at their basis attachment issues , which in turn are grounded in a primal issue of not feeling safe . Adopted children live to often from this fear-based place even in the best of adopted, nurturing families. At one time in my (Dr Y) group of boys at the therapeutic boarding school for which I was senior therapist, over half of my boys were from adopted families. When we looked at the school's population overall, it too consisted of about 50% adopted teens. Adoption issues were a major area we needed to specifically address. I soon started a special adopted group for the boys. We looked at such things as what they knew about their birth parents, if they wanted to know more about their birth parents, and other issues surrounding being adopted. Now, as background to this story, this was in the days before we had introduced Equine Assisted Counseling to the school. With their adopted parents' permissions, several of the boys went on the internet to see what they could find out about their birth parents. At the same time the parents were asked to provide information about what they knew about their sons' birth parents and conditions.
