Afghanistan Films 'Movies'
Afghanistan films and theater shows had many viewers in the past, but during the three decades of war and conflict Afghanistan Films/movies have received the most damage and almost lost it’s value among Afghan People. The biggest damage on Afghanistan movies were during the dark period of Taliban when they shut down the cinemas, burnt and destroyed the movies and banned all entertainment in Afghanistan. After the collapse of Taliban government there was a reopening of cinemas and re broadcasting of television. Due to lack of Afghan movies, people turned to foreign movies but especially to Indian movies which brought a strange twist into Afghan culture. Despite all that, the Afghan film makers pulled their sleeves up and started to make their own films from the scratch and with limited budget. I want to mention two movies out many other local films that were made after the Taliban regime. Osama by Seddiq Barmak who is a talented Afghan filmmakers was produced in 2003 and depicts the cruelty and dark period of the Taliban. The second is the Earth and Ashes by Atiq Rahimi another Afghan/French talented director that shows the conflict and result of war and filmed in Afghanistan in 2004. These two award winner movies are produced after the Taliban regime. Since then, there have been several local and international movies made about Afghanistan. However, despite the security issues, several movies were shot inside Afghanistan including Indian Bollywood production Kabul Express and French prodction Kabuli Kid.

How to Navigate Afghanistan Culture
There are several things to keep in mind from the very beginning when learning about Afghanistan culture There is no one expert on Afghanistan culture! The culture is so diverse and ancient it would be impossible to be a so-called "expert" on the entire country However, there are "experts" on different aspects of Afghan culture, and we aim to provide the best information on current culture. The expectation is that with the flood of aid, soldiers, and focus on Afghanistan, more foreigners a.k.a. KharejI (foreigners) will be coming and need to be better equipped in order to do well here.

Afghanistan consists of a variety of ethnic groups called Afghans,
the overwhelming majority of whom are Muslim, usually either followers of Sunni or Shia Islam. Afghans are related to many of the ethnic groups in Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
The Pashtuns (Pushtuns), who make up more then half the population, have traditionally been the dominant ethnic group. Their homeland lies south of the Hindu Kush, but Pashtun groups live in all parts of the country. Many of them also live in northwestern Pakistan, where they are called Pathans. Pashtuns are usually farmers, though a large number of them are nomads, living in tents made of black goat hair. For the most part, Afghans are farmers, although a significant minority follows a nomadic lifestyle. In the years since the Soviet invasion and the later civil war, a large number of Afghans have fled the country and become refugees in neighboring nations, most typically in Iran and Pakistan.
    Arts and Crafts
The arts and crafts Afghanistan map contains striking architectural remnants of all ages, including Greek and Buddhist stupas (shrines or reliquaries) and monasteries, arches, monuments, intricate Islamic minarets (the tall, slender towers on mosques), temples and forts. Among the most famous sites are the great mosques of Herat and Mazar-e Sharif; the minaret of a mosque at Jam in the west central highlands; the 1000-year-old Great Arch of Qal'eh-ye Bost; the Chel Zina (Forty Steps) and rock inscriptions made by Mughal emperor Babur in Kandahar; the Great Buddha of Bamian (55 m/180 ft tall); the "Towers of Victory" in Ghazni; and Emperor Babur's tomb and the great Bala Hissar fort in Kabul.

Afghanistan : Culture
The hope and exhilaration felt among Afghans as the last Soviet troops retreated from their nation in early 1989 gave way to frustration within months. Disparate Afghan groups had struggled valiantly against a common enemy, but the extent of the discord and rivalries which characterized their efforts became ominously noticeable. Islam as a measure of national identity is challenging a century of inroads by secular institutions. orthodox Afghan methods of conflict resolution guided by the spirit of equalitarianism and respect for others are being severely thwarted in an environment surfeited with modern weaponry supplied by outsiders pursuing a numerosity of regional agendas centered on Afghanistan. The Afghan area thus evolved as a zone of cultural transition with a complex ethnolinguistic population as varied as its geography which encompasses fertile mountain valleys in the east, plains and grasslands in the north, a central mountain core, and deserts and semideserts in the west and southwest. The inhabitants of these different areas take pride in these cultural differentiations and follow their own customs, distinct tribal norms, religious variations, divergent attitudes toward family and gender, and contrasting subsistence life-styles. The Culture of Afghanistan
Afghanistan Culture Overview
For a long period in history, Afghanistan has been ravaged by invasions, civil wars and terrorist activities. This atmosphere has disrupted and overturned much of the country’s social and cultural traditions. However, during these days, one sees the resuming of a settled life and a return to tradition as a great number of refugees are returning home. The society of Afghanistan is dominantly of tribal origin. Therefore, tribal affiliation pre-dominates the people’s sentiments than the sense of nationhood. Since the Arab-Muslim conquest, Islam has become the common religion of all the tribal groups and has largely influenced the culture of the land. However, different regions of the country have their own unique traditions. This accounts for the multi-cultural and multi-lingual character of the nation. About 99 percent of the people practice Islam, 80 percent of them being Sunnis and 19 percent of them being Shi’as. Apart from this, one sees the existence of other traditions such as Pshtunwali, Baha’i faith, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Zoroastrianism. Mullahs or the male members of the religion who can recite Quran from memory are considered as the most important religious figures in Afghanistan.
Afghani Foods
The wide and varying landscape of Afghanistan aids the growth of a range of crops in Afghanistan. The cuisines of Afghanistan are largely based on cereals like wheat, maize, barley and rice. Afghan grapes are among the most popular in the world. Some of the notable dishes of the land are Palau; Kofta or meatballs; sweet pumpkins; Aush or handmade noodles; Gosh feel or pastries; sweets like halwa and jelabi; Khajoor; a type of meat dumplings called mantu; Afghani bread; the traditional rice dish called Qabuli Palav; sabzi; Afghani soup called Shorba, and rice pudding called Shir Berenj.

    Afghanistan - Culture
History Culture Geography Religion ... Current Events Afghanistan has been disrupted over the past 25 years by civil wars, invasions, rule of the Taliban, and terrorist activities which have destroyed much of the country's culture, family and tribal connections, thus creating hundred's of thousands of refugees. As a result, it becomes difficult to discuss Afghanistan's culture as many of the traditions and ways of life have been ignored and overturned. However, family and tribal life is resuming, refugees are slowly returning and being resettled, and some of the traditional patterns of life are being re-established. Since Afghanistan society is basically a tribal one, tribal affiliation is often more important than a sense of nationhood. Tribes have traditionally had strong patrilineal organization which was essential in the nomadic days of the past. Today, this patrilineal and patriarchical system is reinforced by Islam, the religion of all the various Afghan tribal groups. Like other nomadic groups, the idealized Afghan leader is a warrior poet; prowess in arms and facility in composing and reciting poetry are the twin avenues to respect and recognition in traditional nomadic society. Thus, poetry is the chief literary form of most Afghanis and famous poets of the past and present are known throughout the country.
