Strategically located at the crossroads of major north-south and east-west trade routes, it has attracted a succession of invaders including Alexander the Great , in the fourth century B.C. Currently, the United States continues the global war on terrorism there. The Hindu Kush mountains, running northeast to southwest across the country, divide it into three major regions: 1) the Central Highlands, which form part of the Himalayan Mountains and account for roughly two thirds of the country’s area; 2) the Southwestern Plateau, which accounts for one-fourth of the land; and 3) the smaller Northern Plains area, which contains the country’s most fertile soil.

    Afghanistan: GEOGRAPHY

GEOGRAPHY Location: Afghanistan is located in Central Asia, north and west of Pakistan, east of Iran, and south of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. The narrow Wakhan Corridor extends from northeasternmost Afghanistan to meet with China. Size: Afghanistan occupies approximately 647,500 square kilometers, slightly less than Texas. Land Boundaries: Afghanistan has borders with the following countries: China, 76 kilometers; Iran, 936 kilometers; Pakistan, 2,430 kilometers; Tajikistan, 1,206 kilometers; Turkmenistan, 744 kilometers; and Uzbekistan, 137 kilometers. Disputed Territory: Afghanistan has no boundary disputes; ongoing incursions, smuggling, and terrorist movement across the Pakistan border are addressed in regular bilateral meetings. Length of Coastline/Maritime Claims: Afghanistan is landlocked. Topography: The terrain of Afghanistan is dominated by rugged mountain ranges, which generally run from the northeast to the southwest. Mountains occupy all but the north-central and southwestern regions of the country, which are dominated by plains. Nearly half the country has an elevation of 2,000 meters or more, and the highest peaks in the northeastern Hindu Kush range exceed 7,000 meters. Historically, mountain passes along the northeastern border with present-day Pakistan have been of great strategic importance. Significant parts of the southwestern plains region are desert.

      Afghanistan - Geography
History Culture Geography Religion ... Current Events There are four major river systems in Afghanistan, including the Amu Darya (the Oxus of ancient history) which is the current boundary with the Central Asian Republics of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Only one of these rivers, the Kabul River, leads to the sea, and even then it flows into the Indus which flows to the sea; many of the rivers and streams empty into the desert. Three large dams have been built in these rivers to provide electricity; while they were not bombed during the wars, they are not functioning well due to looting, lack of maintenance and silting in the reservoirs. The climate is extreme with bitterly cold winters and blazing hot summers. The northern mountains are sub arctic in temperature due to their height, with dry cold winters. Those bordering Pakistan often filter monsoon air masses into central and southern Afghanistan, bringing humidity and rain. Flooding is common as sudden rains may turn streams into torrents; invading armies have been trapped by such flooding more than once as have nomadic tribes. The region lies on a major tectonic fault line and thus is prone to many earthquakes, about 50 each year. The largest recent one was in 1985 when a quake in the Hindu Kush Mountains measured 7.3 on the Richter scale.

    GEOGRAPHY
Afghanistan Table of Contents Afghanistan's rugged terrain and seasonally harsh climate have not deterred foreign invaders who coveted this land or sought to cross it on the road to further conquests. The history of Afghanistan is replete with tales of invasion. Yet the rugged landscape combined with the fiercely independent spirit of the Afghan people have seriously impeded and often repulsed would-be conquerors. Afghanistan resembles an irregularly shaped hanging leaf with the Wakhan Corridor and the Pamir Knot as its stem in the northeast. Situated between 29 35' and 38 40' north latitude and 60 31' and 75 00' east latitude, it encompasses approximately 652,290 square kilometers, roughly the size of Texas, stretching 1,240 kilometers from east to west and 565 kilometers from north to south. Afghanistan is completely landlocked, bordered by Iran to the west (925 kilometers), by the Central Asian States of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan to the north and northeast (2,380 kilometers), by China at the easternmost top of the Wakhan Corridor (96 kilometers), and by Pakistan to the east and south (2,432 kilometers).
