Media Collection Guide George Mason University Libraries AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES: Civil Rights After ten years the court and the schools.
The 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka ruling made it clear that segregation would not be tolerated and that states must comply with federal law. In this program, filmed ten years after Brown, news correspondents report on the mixed progress made toward integrating public schools in Nashville, New Rochelle, New Orleans and Prince Edward County, Virginia. Stumbling blocks such as faculty segregation, busing and segregational zoning are examined. A discussion featuring Attorney General Robert Kennedy, Georgia Governor Carl Sanders and Ex-Secretary of the NAACP, Roy Wilkins concludes the program.

Location of death: Detroit, MI
Cause of death: Natural Causes
Remains: Buried, Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit, MI
Gender: Female
Religion: Methodist

Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Activist Nationality: United States Executive summary: Wouldn't sit in the back of the bus On 1 December 1955, Rosa Parks had just finished her shift as a department store seamstress, and she was exhausted. When the bus came, she paid her fare and took a seat, and when the driver announced that blacks had to get up so whites could sit down, Rosa Parks said no. That was the law, but she wasn't the first black passenger to say no. She wasn't the first to be tossed off the bus and arrested. Rosa Parks, though, was happily married, gainfully employed, attractive but serious, and a member of the NAACP a perfect combination to get the world's attention. 35,000 flyers were mimeographed overnight, and the next morning Montgomery's blacks began boycotting the bus company. Parks was quickly fired. Very few blacks rode the bus after that, and many rode mules or got very sore feet. Black cabbies picked up black passengers for 10¢ (the same fare the bus company charged), and found their insurance canceled.

685 Discrimination.

Imagine the frustration of knowing that the last scholarship available to a university went to someone due to race, national origin, or etc. Would this make you angry? Once anger begins when it comes to problems with racism, often the problems continue to grow. My opinion is that racism is a problem that hurts everyone. Racism is a fact in life today. It is pure discrimination and cannot be allowed in employment or in education. Racism hurts everyone involved.

Michael F. Adams

ne of the things I have come to realize in my two years as president of this great institution is that one of the important facets of the University is the role it plays in nurturing those who write either for publication or for the simple but powerful love of the written word. A great university must have great writers. It must celebrate great writing. It must encourage new writers. At the University of Georgia, we are doing all of that. In October, Mary and I hosted a literary reception at the President's House. I must tell you that I was in awe of the talent that assembled on the back porch that evening. From history professor Ed Larson, the first UGA faculty member to win a Pulitzer Prize (for his book on the Scopes trial, Summer for the Gods ) to arts and sciences staff member Phillip Lee Williams, whose novels have been widely and critically praised, to gifted writers like English faculty members James Kilgo and Judith Ortiz Cofer, the house was abuzz with the conversation of people who love words. I was surprised to learn from several guests that this was the first time they had been to the President's House. I hope to correct that and to make this reception a regular event.

Book Sense Welcomes New Publisher Partners
Posted Wednesday, Jun 14, 2006 The Book Sense family of Publisher Partners has two new additions: the University of Georgia Press in Athens, Georgia, and Behler Publications in Lake Forest, California. Founded in 1938, the University of Georgia Press (UGA) is one of the largest publishing houses in the South. UGA's titles encompass three distinct dimensions: works of scholarship, regional trade books, and creative and literary works. Its subjects of new scholarship include Transatlantic and Southern history, African American studies, civil rights history, legal history, Native American studies, women's studies, and environmental studies, among others. "We publish a wide array of books for general readers including fiction, narrative nonfiction, and popular history, often with a focus on Georgia and the South," said John McLeod, UGA marketing and sales manager and the press' assistant director. "The creative and literary part of our list, which is national in focus, includes books published in conjunction with the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction, the Associated Writing Programs Award for Creative Nonfiction, and the Cave Canem Poetry Prize." UGA's bestselling backlist includes titles in its field guides series, such as the recent
