Archaeology and Palaeontology, South Africa
Sterkfontein Caves South Africa is the birthplace of the human race. It’s a scary thought and a huge responsibility. It was here – on the Highveld near Johannesburg – where we first stood upright, experimented with our rather useful thumbs, played with fire, and cunningly bashed a few rocks together to make simple hand-axes, thus starting out on the slippery slope that led to the AK47, neutron bombs and chemical warfare. Ever wonder about our earliest ancestors or the great empires that once controlled entire sections of the Sahara Desert? U of C boasts one of only three dedicated Departments of Archaeology in North America and the study of African archaeology is one of its principal research areas. U of C students get free access to the conference and several sessions and workshops are geared directly toward them. Over the next three to four months, the organizing committee will be pulling together sponsors for the conference, with sponsorship fees going almost entirely to funding travel costs for African-based researchers.
