African dance
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Members from the Kankouran West African Dance Company perform during a ceremony in the Rose Garden, White House in 2007 African dance refers mainly to the dance of Sub-Saharan Africa , and more appropriately African dances because of the many cultural differences in musical and movement styles. These dances must be viewed in close connection with African music , as many African languages have no word to define music. These dances teach social patterns and values and helps people work, mature, praise or criticize members of the community while celebrating festivals and funerals, competing, reciting history, proverbs and poetry; and to encounter gods. The most widely used musical instrument in Africa is the human voice. Although nomadic groups such as the Maasai do not traditionally use drums; in villages throughout the continent, the sound and the rhythm of the drum express the mood of the people. The drum is the sign of life; its beat is the heartbeat of the community. Such is the power of the drum to evoke emotions , to touch the souls of those who hear its rhythms. In an African community, coming together in response to the beating of the drum is an opportunity to give one another a sense of belonging and of solidarity. It is a time to connect with each other, to be part of that collective rhythm of the life in which young and old, rich and poor, men and women are all invited to contribute to the society.

Particular dances often coincide with a particular style of music, and indeed, a dance and its associated music are often thought of as two elements of a single cultural phenomenon. While there are many different styles of African dance, they do share some key characteristics. For one, they tend to place an emphasis on the collective rather than the individual. Named in honor of Marie's maternal grandmother, the Maimouna Keita School was organized to bring awareness to all who embrace and promote African Culture and History.
Although members of Maimouna Keita have achieved international recognition, the school remains dedicated to its original charter to "teach and present African culture to promote cultural enrichment and help bring about a greater understanding and appreciation of African culture." Towards this end, the Maimouna Keita School offers, produces and presents innovative programming in music, dance, theater and the humanities that celebrate the broad range of cultural traditions within the entire African Diaspora
Over 1000 students throughout the United States and abroad participate in school sponsored programs. These students come from vast socio-economic backgrounds and encompass all age groups (pre-school to senior citizens). Maimouna Keita programs fall into four areas: Humanities and Educational Programs; Cultural Exchange Programs; Community Outreach Programs; and Mainstage Performances.
The Maimouna Keita West African Dance Company is available for performances, demonstrations, weddings and other special events. Email ayokaw@hotmail.com or contact Marie Basse Wiles at (718) 455-7136 for booking information

Artistic Director/Choreographer
Company Biography Hayor Bibimma Dance Company is a Twin Cities based West African dance group specialized in traditional West African drumming, dance and storytelling. Hayor Bibimma's aim is to increase public participation in traditional African performing arts, enhance cultural awareness and ease public accessibility to the richness of African heritage. The establishment of this company invariably ensures the survival of certain traditional African dances, the symbolic meaning of movements as well as the accompanying music, songs, stories and their cultural significance. With conscientious attention to styles and presentation, Hayor Bibimma will perpetuate tradition and infuse it with a contemporary twist, weaving a tapestry of cultural richness. This genre, appeals to the curious, the connected and kindred spirits of all ages. And thus the company is aptly named Hayor Bibimma means bringing the masses of Mother Africa together
Instruments
Hayor Bibimma's instruments are traditional. Specific instruments serve specific purpose. Timing and rhythm are created using rattles and bells. Percussion is supplied by drums. Each drum has a name, a voice, a function and history. The tones and phrases spoken by the individual instruments are interwoven to create a dense and dynamic texture of sound. While the support instruments provide the contours, the master drummer provides the outline and cues of change and transformation. It is he who "talks" in shrouded phrases. The relationship of all parts speaking together creates an acoustic mosaic.

She negotiates the space in order to give this past a present meaning. In the film, Maboungou is quoted thus, "It is never just there, just like that for me. It is a space that is inhabited; it is a space that is alive and I have to negotiate. I`m not just coming in to fill it up. There are things already there." [click the link for more]
