Archives of Early Lindy Hop HISTORY OF SWING DANCING: AFRICAN INFLUENCES
Introduction: During the days of slavery in the United States, the African slaves entertained themselves, and others, with musical and dance forms that contained elements they brought with them from Africa. Some of the dances the slaves created went on to become national dance crazes for all Americans, such as the Cakewalk, and later the Black Bottom and the Charleston. When the Lindy Hop emerged in Harlem in the late 1920's it contained many of these African characteristics. However, it was danced in a rigid, upright manner (as you can see on the Shorty George Snowden filmclip, After Seben ). In the mid-thirties, Frank Manning introduced the angular posture that soon swept the Savoy Ballroom. Manning had no idea that he was bringing the dance closer to its African roots he says, "I thought it looked better that way, that's all." What follows are a list of characteristics of African dance that are found in African-American dance forms. Many of these characteristics are still very much a part of swing dancing. Some of these characteristics are seen primarily in Savoy style Lindy Hop, and less in some of the other swing forms.

If ever a name reflected a personality, this one is it: Joy.
Joy Williams started dancing at age 4 or 5. Her face lights up when she tells of her years studying dance, traveling to other countries to learn the native moves, soaking in the steps, the twists and turns, the magic that each dance possesses, and now, teaching others.
Williams easily leads a group of women through the African dance steps. Loosen your shoulders. Get down lower. Do what you feel. There is no right or wrong way, you will find your own way. Relax. Enjoy. The women move and sway and laugh and in no time this group looks like they've been doing it forever. This was their first lesson, filled with joy.
Joy is a dancer, choreographer and teacher, who participated in the 2007 American Dance Festival. In addition to the African Dance class she taught on this day, she also works with the Duke dance department. Don't let the name of her dance website, Dance Chapel Hill , mislead you, it's currently located in Carrboro off Pleasant St., another name that fits. Inside the Fellowship Hall at Church of the Harvest (100A Hillview St.) is where Williams follows her destiny, in dance. She couldn't be happier. Her smile is infectious as she welcomes her students into the room.
Her classes include Move Those Arms (for folks in wheelechairs), Body and Activism, Afro-Modern and Pilates. In Fall 2008, Joy will be offering an Afro-Fusion class, designed so people with mental or physical challenges can also benefit from dance.

Home African Dance, Afro Jazz and Latin Jazz Discover new ways of dancing in September (start : 22nd)! Download the flyer here!
African dance is all about pleasure, the interaction between rhythm and motion, and getting the whole body moving. Inge's African dance classes are based on traditional Guinean dance and the music is an essential part of these dances. Inge's latest classes in Afro Jazz and Latin Jazz will both have African elements in them. Below, and in the section Dance classes, you find more info about them.
The Afro Jazz class is an African dance class influenced by Jazz and other dance forms that have their roots in the African dance (e.g. dances from the Caribbean). These different influences give us more possibilities to explore the technique and body control that underlies the African dance, and they will broaden the dance vocabulary and movement flow of the class. The Latin Jazz class will also work with body isolations that are a main part of African dance, but it will use more latin music (e.g. mambo music), and it will combine mambo with Jazz- and modern-jazz moves. As you might know, Jazz has its roots in the African dance, witch means there are many similarities with African dance.
These new classes are great for African dancers who want to improve their body control, physicality and body/space awareness. Latin dancers can pick up on the isolations and contact with the floor that they need to make their dancing more fluent and natural. Last but not least, contemporary- and Jazz lovers can enjoy some different music and fusion styles. In short; these classes are suitable for anyone who loves to dance and wants to try something new in Perth!

African Dance Types
Africa is a vast continent, consisting of many countries and hugely diverse cultures. African dance mainly refers to the collective dance type of the Sub-Saharan Africa, which is the African tribal dance. There are many aspects that affect the African dance types. Here are some glimpses of African dance types... African dance types are distinct from each other because of the diversity, of the nomadic groups and the indigenous tribes, that practice them. The African dances symbolize social structure and traditional values of the people related to them. These dance types help the African people to praise, criticize and even work with each other. African dances heavily rely upon the African music, which is a very interesting form of music , despite the fact that in many African tribal languages, there is no particular word for 'music'.
African Dance Peculiarities
In most African countries , music is an essential part of people's daily life. The two basic and very important musical components in African culture are human voice and the drums. It is also true that many African tribal dance forms, such as the Masai, don't use the African drums. In native language African drums, known as Djembe symbolize people's day to day life. The drum beats explain the mood of the tribal people and evokes the deepest emotions.

It would be cheap on our part to just look for free funds. We will work hard for the funds you give us. For example, we will train your staff in Quickbooks(Accounting), Computer Literacy(File and directory management,Microsoft office), Computer troubleshooting and Repairs, Web Page design, Web Hosting, Computer Networking(Windows, Linux, Novell, Machintosh), Internet(DSL ,Cable and Dial-Up), Virus Removal, Commercial/Residential Maintenance contracts and other areas such as languages(French translation). We hope that you will give us a chance to help the poor people in remote villages that were unfairly hit by the war. The funds will also be used to raise awareness and to accelerate progress on sanitation: for example, the schools and the health centers don't have any running water. In addition, there is no electricity, as a result, women in labor give birth in the dark and many of them dye giving birth. So, the funds will also be used to connect the village to the national electrical power network and to supply the schools with a network of low-cost computers. Finally, we plan to move back there in order to effectively and efficiently supervise the whole project and train the schools' staff in the maintenance of the computers and the sanitation infrastructure.
