There are anywhere between 1,500 and 2,000 languages in Africa, most of which are still poorly documented. While much linguistic field work is being carried out in Africa, and thus also many publications do see the light of day, access to descriptive materials is in general hard to come by and often fragmentary. These webpages aim to simplify the finding of linguistic Africana on the net. WHAT'S THIS SITE ABOUT? The main purpose of these pages is to offer easy access to online materials dealing with African languages. These pages contain links to other sites hosting free stuff, be they downloadable files (of any format), web-readable texts, searchable databases, or whatever. Particular attention is given to materials that contain structural/descriptive data, though not exclusively so. Links to commercial enterprises won't be added, as a rule. UPDATES AND REVISIONS We are currently converting Jouni's wonderful resources into a database format, to allow for easier wiki-type updates in the future. We hope to go live with the new site soon.

AFRICAN STUD IES INSTITUTE The University of Georgia ASI Home Swahili Yoruba Zulu ... Contact ASI Africa Languages Website The African Languages Program is a unit in the Department of Comparative Literature. For the time being, 3 languages, Swahili, Yoruba and Zulu, are being taught at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. Swahili has a longer history at the University of Georgia , having been initiated in 1988. The instruction of Yoruba started in 1996 and the Zulu program was started in 1998. The languages program is very popular with a total of over 100 students a year. Swahili has three sections at the elementary and two at the intermediate levels. Yoruba and Zulu each have two sections. The program emphasizes the incorporation of culture in language instruction and learning. Each semester, the students participate in a cultural awareness program which includes ethnic foods, skits from the language classes, and a guest speaker. This is usually the highlight of the program, one that both students and their friends (sometimes family members) look forward to. The program is the backbone of the African Studies Institute. Many of the students in the Language Program take other courses in African Studies to qualify for a certificate in African Studies.

The Islamic influence in North Africa also means that Arabic is spoken in every country along the north coast of the continent from Egypt in the east through Libya, Tunisia and Algeria, to Morocco in the west. However, there are also a huge number of native African languages. These are unrelated to the Indo-European family of languages. Most African languages are part of the Niger-Congo family, Afro-Asiatic family or Chari-Nile family of languages. Many official documents from African countries are written in European languages such as French or English or in Arabic. Aside from these, the most commonly requested African languages are:

SocioLingo Africa . I hope you will continue to send me items to post. The move to its own home The wordpress.com blog was running at up to 1500 hits a day and passed 700,000 accumulative hits and had over 3,000 posts. As the blog has got bigger I decided that I needed to moved the blog from WordPress.com (a free host) to a commercial host so that I can try and cover my costs in running it. So I have now set up my own domain and the blog has a new address http://www.sociolingo.com DreamHost , an ethical company owned by its workers, and I am really grateful for the set-up help from Ninja Blog Set Up . One of the casualties of the move was that I had to reduce the number of blog posts by more than half in order to transfer the blog across. Most of the posts that have been jettisoned were old news stories or posts that were doubled, but you may find some favourites missing and I am really sorry about that. It will take a while to build the blog back up, so please be patient with me as I learn the new WordPress interface. June 3, 2009

Languages:
More than 1,000 different languages are spoken in Africa. Although most countries in Eastern and Southern Africa have adopted colonial European languages for official government business, most people speak indigenous or local languages.
In Namibia, people may speak English, Afrikaans, German, Oshivambo, Herero, or Nama. In Tanzania, people can speak English or Swahili.
Due to their colonial pasts, the majority of the countries in West Africa have adopted French, English, Spanish, or Portuguese as national languages. The majority of each countries' inhabitants, however, also speak one or more indigenous languages. Cameroonians may speak one or more of 24 different languages, in addition to French or English.
Yoruba, Hause, and Igbo are some of the nearly 400 native languages of Nigeria.
Most people in the North African countries speak Arabic and follow Islam . In some parts of North Africa, however, people are multilingual and speak several languages. For example, the official languages of Chad and Djibouti are Arabic and French.

Most of the links are organised according to the six major African language groupings: (These categories may change eventually.) On the above pages, you can find links to linguistic material categorised language-wise, under separate headings for each individual language that I have found material for. Or else, there are further links to take you to the proper page. Thus if you're looking for material on, say, Swahili, you first need to know that it is a Bantu language. You also need to know that the Bantu languages belong to the Niger-Congo language family. You then click your way to the Bantu page, and from there you will eventually (hopefully) find the Swahili page.

Welcome... The discovery that language can be a barrier to communication is quickly made by all who travel, study, govern or sell. Whether the activity is tourism, research, government, policing, business, or data dissemination, the lack of a common language can severely impede progress and can halt it altogether.
