THE nocturnal animals at Johannesburg Zoo will have cosy night rooms to keep them warm before the winter chill sets in, thanks to a sponsorship from Knowledge Objects Healthcare.
An amount of R40 000 was handed over on Tuesday, 17 April, as part of the company's adoption of the honey badger, porcupine, small spotted genet and African wild cat, all of which live in night rooms.
"The money will be used to revamp six night rooms and sponsor a disadvantaged school for an educational day out at the zoo," said one of the zoo's educationists, Teresa Slacke.
That day out is part of the zoo's sponsor-a-school Vukuzenzele Project.
Knowledge Objects Healthcare received an adoption pack, which includes species information sheets, entrance vouchers, free parking and adoption certificates.
"We thank the company for the donation and we are happy to get the opportunity to make the night rooms beautiful and cosy for the animals, just in tome for winter," said the marketing manager, Louise Gordon.

Yerkes chimpanzees `return' to Africa in unprecedented loan
The first loan of chimpanzees from the United States to an African zoological park occurred this month, when the Yerkes Primate Research Center transferred 10 of its chimpanzees to the East London Zoo in South Africa. "We are excited that the Yerkes Center can offer this unprecedented loan that will add another bond between the `new' South Africa, Emory University and the Atlanta community," said Thomas Insel, director of Yerkes, which has more than 200 chimpanzees in addition to almost 3,000 rhesus monkeys and other primates. Although chimpanzees are not among the wildlife native to South Africa, the loan of chimpanzees to that country's East London Zoo is regarded as a repatriation of sorts of these animals to their home continent, said Insel. In Eastern Africa, wild populations of chimpanzees are found in Tanzania, Zaire, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and the Sudan, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. "The loan of chimpanzees is probably the single most important event in the East London Zoo's long history," said A.D. Janse, director of the 80-year-old zoo. "It is the first really important step to the development of the zoo into one of the most important environmental educational facilities in the country.

There is a third bloodline that comes from a white male that was captured in the Timbavati area in the late 1980's and kept by a private reserve.
As in the case of the white tigers, the white lions have been linebred to their own relatives to perpetuate the unique white/cream-colored coat. Presently, however, representatives of the various bloodlines are being brought together for the first time at a zoo by Kevin Chambers of the Zoological Animal Reproduction Center ...and who has proven indispensable in providing info on these beautiful cats...by the way...
Unlike the white tigers, all of the white lions are of a known subspecies... Panthera leo krugeri. Captive lions in general are a notoriously mixed up lot. According to the latest studbook, there are only 63 lions of known subspecies in North American and South African zoos combined. Of these... 53 are P. l. krugeri. (The Toronto Zoo, however, presently has their white female paired with a male of mixed subspecies. If they produce cubs, those cubs will not be subspecies-pure.). At current date there are only 25 White Lions within the United States. The White Lions Zoo Dynamics

Group Dynamics
Known as the King of the Jungle, Lion actually lives on the open African grasslands. Originally, He ranged from the Mediterranean Sea to Asia and south to Africa. Hunted by Romans for their Games, Lion first disappeared from Europe and Asia Minor. As Lion hunting increased, his range shrank to where now Lion lives only in Africa. Unlike most members of the Cat Family, Lion is social. He lives in a Pride and forms coalitions with his Male Friends. In his Pride, Lionesses work together to hunt and chase off predators. Meanwhile with his Male Partners, Lion defends their territory against intruders. With his Coalition, Lion rules the Pride for a few years until a new Coalition arises. Then He and his Male Partners leave. When Lions hunt, They form a cooperative group. Whether They are killing Seals on a beach or Cape Buffalos on the savannah, the Pride forms a plan of action. Some Lionesses wait downwind while their Sisters herd the animals towards Them. Other Lionesses travel around the prey to close off avenues of escape. Suddenly, a Lioness shows Herself, causing panic among the prey. The animals rush headlong into the Pride’s ambush. Because Lion is yellow, and loves sleeping in the sun, He has been the symbol of the Sun for many cultures. People so admired Lion, that they thought He possessed spiritual powers equal to his physical attitudes. As King of the Beasts, Lion was wise and just.
