S OCIAL G ERONTOLOGY THE A GING R EVOLUTION
It is the meaning that men attribute to their life, it is their entire system of values that define the meaning and value of old age. The reverse applies: by the way in which a society behaves toward its old people it uncovers the naked, and often carefully hidden, truth about its real principles and aims. Simone de Beauvoir, The Coming of Age If we were able to bring someone from Shakespeare's time and deposit them onto a beach in contemporary Orlando, perhaps what would be the most striking to this individual would not be the 747 overhead but rather the large number of older individuals. Click here to see: Generations now alive are among the first in history to be raised with the expectation of old age, forerunners of a longevity revolution that will be felt for centuries to come. Some twenty percentage of all humans who have ever lived past the age of 65 are now alive. So profound is this demographic revolution that every aspect of social life and society is affected. A late 1980s Census Bureau study noted that "rapidly expanding numbers of older people represents a social phenomenon without historical precedent...[that] has various economic implications for individuals, families, public policy-makers." Those now old420 million world-wide as of 2001are literally pioneers of a new stage of the lifespan and the life course they're trailblazing will determinein partour own passages through time. To view the international scope of this demographic phenomenon see the Census Bureau & National Institute of Aging's

S OCIOLOGY OF A GING
Over thirty years ago Simone de Beauvoir observed in The Coming of Age how "Not only are there many more aged people than there were, but they no longer spontaneously integrate with the community: society is compelled to decide upon their status, and the decision can only be taken at government level. Old age has become the object of a policy" (1972:222)
PARALLELS BETWEEN ELDERLY AND MINORITY STATUSES
When you think about it, there are a number of parallels between the social statuses of the old and African Americans in American society, between ageism and racism:
  • Historically, the social opportunities of both have largely been granted rather than earned Both groups have been and continue to be stigmatized for unchangeable attributes, perceived as having lesser ability than those in the mainstream Both have a history of being discriminated against in workplace, where they serve as a balance between the supply and demand for labor So marginal had been their citizenship claims that Congress had to pass legislation recognizing rights: the Civil Rights and Older Americans Acts Residential segregation Viewed as a political minority AARP vs. NAACP: age-consciousness and race-consciousness: black panthers/gray panthers

The Social Context of Aging (SoCA)
    Mission
The programme aims at identifying the determinants and consequences of older adults’ social networks. The focus of the research programme is on individual-level outcomes and determinants of social networks, but also goes beyond the individual level as well, including the family-level and the neighbourhood-level. The structure and content of social networks and their antecedents or consequences are likely to vary over times and places, since social networks are created and maintained within a specific social and historical context. The overarching research question of the programme is: What are the individual and contextual determinants and consequences of variations in older adult’s social networks and how do they vary over time and place? The programmes heuristic framework builds upon the model of successful ageing within gerontology and the life course perspective within sociology. The dynamic perspective and the combination of the individual and contextual level are distinctive features of the research programme.

Another Review at MyShelf.Com The Third Chapter
Passion, Risk, and Adventure in the 25 Years After 50
by Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot I cried as I read the book The Third Chapter: Passion, Risk, and Adventure in the 25 years After 50 by Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot. Why? It was my own personal story. It was so uncanny that each part of the book explored and explained all that I had been trying to do. In the first section on loss and liberation when one reaches the transition period in our "circle of life," Lawrence-Lightfoot says, "The transition is made easier and smoother if we search out continuous learning; the skills and qualities that we honed in the past might be transferred to the new problems and situations that we face in the present and future." To me even section titles are symbols of understanding what those who are going through their "Third Chapters" means. "Facing the Mirror," "Loss and Liberation," Constancy and Change," "Healing Wounds: The Journey Home," "Looking Back and Giving Forward," "Crossing Boundaries and Embracing Contradictions," "New Learning: Body, Voice, and Soul," and "Cracks in the Mirror," literally show the path that people follow as they go through their Third Chapter, me included. As I read the samples of the people Lawrence-Lightfoot interviewed for her book, one woman hit a chord in my soul. Katrina Adams, a portrait painter, unlike the others Lawrence-Lightfoot interviewed, "spent her life as a single mother taking on a variety of graphic-arts jobs that barely put food on the table for herself and her two sons," which was my story too. Like her, I was a single parent and well understood how hard it is to go through the Third Chapter. When the first and second ones were so difficult you end up reaching out for help.
