Ancient Origins
Developed independently by geographically distant populations, systematic agriculture first appeared in Southwest Asia in the Fertile Crescent , particularly in modern-day southern Iraq and Syria . Around 9500 BC, proto-farmers began to select and cultivate food plants with desired characteristics. Though there is evidence of earlier sporadic use of wild cereals, it was not until after 9500 BC that the eight so-called founder crops of agriculture appear: first emmer and einkorn wheat , then hulled barley peas lentils bitter vetch ... chick peas and flax By 7000 BC, small-scale agriculture reached Egypt . From 7000 BC the Indian subcontinent saw farming of wheat and barley , attested by archaeological excavation at Mehrgarh in Balochistan . By 6000 BC, mid-scale farming was entrenched on the banks of the Nile River. About this time, agriculture was developed independently in the Far East, with rice , rather than wheat, as the primary crop.

Farming history ... e Agriculture was developed at least 10,000 years ago, and it has undergone significant developments since the time of the earliest cultivation. Evidence points to the Fertile Crescent of the Middle East as the site of the earliest planned sowing and harvesting of plants that had previously been gathered in the wild. Independent development of agriculture is also believed to have occurred in northern and southern China , Africa's Sahel New Guinea and several regions of the Americas . Agricultural practices such as irrigation crop rotation fertilizers , and pesticides were developed long ago but have made great strides in the past century. The Haber-Bosch method for synthesizing ammonium nitrate represented a major breakthrough and allowed crop yields to overcome previous constraints.

    History of Agriculture
Art, science, and industry of managing the growth of plants and animals for human use. In a broad sense agriculture includes cultivation of the soil, growing and harvesting crops, breeding and raising of livestock, dairying, and forestry. Regional and national agriculture are covered in more detail in individual continent and country articles. See also separate articles on the states of Australia and the U.S. and the provinces of Canada. Modern agriculture depends heavily on engineering and technology and on the biological and physical sciences. Irrigation , drainage , conservation, and sanitation each of which is important in successful farming-are some of the fields requiring the specialized knowledge of agricultural engineers. Agricultural chemistry deals with other vital farm problems, such as uses of fertilizer, insecticide, and fungicide, soil makeup, analysis of agricultural products, and nutritional needs of farm animals. Plant breeding and genetics contribute immeasurably to farm productivity. Genetics has also placed livestock breeding on a scientific basis. Hydroponics, a method of soiless gardening in which plants are grown in chemical nutrient solutions, may solve additional agricultural problems.

An article on the subject of Miller in the Watchman of the 6th inst., being in some particulars erroneous, we have been furnished by Mr. William Warner, with the following correct statement of facts. As we conceive it to be a very interesting subject, we think the editors of newspapers would subserve the farming interest generally by giving it as wide spread a circulation as possible - and every farmer who receives a paper containing the article, ought to preserve the same, in order to try the experiment.
