Agriculture and horticulture in ancient Egypt
Agriculture
Greetings, oh Nile, who springs from the earth and gives Egypt nourishment.
Irrigation
Natural river irrigation shaped the early landscape of ancient Egypt. Drainage was not required for the Valley to become livable. It may have constituted a problem in the lower lying parts of the Delta which were often marshy. With the natural flooding and draining of the floodplain , the annual inundation permitted a single crop-season over two-thirds of the alluvial ground. Canal, tomb of Senedjem
Courtesy Jon Bodsworth Organized by regional authorities, every Egyptian had to move about thirty cubic metres of soil in about ten days every year. With this relatively small investment of labour, they kept the system in working order. Once the main canals, many of them natural, were in place, they just had to be dredged yearly to prevent their clogging up; the levees had to be raised, and smaller ditches had to be re-excavated. When the Nile is overflowing, it floods the Delta and the lands called Libyan and Arabian, for a distance of a journey of two days from both banks in places, and sometimes, sometimes less. I could not learn anything about its nature, neither from the priests or from anyone else. I was curious to learn why the Nile is flooding for a hundred days from the summer solstice; and when this time is passed, sinks again, and the river is low during the whole winter until the summer solstice again.

Agriculture History
When the College opened its doors September 18, 1967, the Agriculture and Applied Life Science Department included three programs-Agriculture Production, Agriculture Supply and Service, Agricultural and Agriculture Transfer. The first freshman agriculture class included 25 students who came from high schools located within the College district as well as surrounding high schools not in a district or in a district where an agriculture program was not offered. During that fall the Agriculture Society was formed as a student organization for ag students. Also in 1967, the Illinois Central College Agriculture Advisory Council was organized with 12 agricultural leaders chosen from within the district. They held quarterly meetings to discuss agriculture classes and community needs, both current and potential. Their comments were instrumental in the formation of the past and present programs. Within a year, needs were identified for Agriculture Mechanics and Ornamental Horticulture programs.

First Farmers: The Origins of Agricultural Societies First Farmers: the Origins of Agricultural Societies offers readers an understanding of the origins and histories of early agricultural populations in all parts of the world and will be of interest to all students of human variation and large-scale patterns in human history. Using data from archaeology, comparative linguistics and biological anthropology, archaeologist Peter Bellwood covers developments within the past 12,000 years in Asia, Europe, Africa, the Pacific and the Americas.First Farmers examines the reasons for the multiple primary origins of agriculture, looks at relations between hunter-gatherers and farmers, and addresses issues of agricultural adoption, the origins and dispersal histories of language families, and the dispersal histories of biological populations. Bellwood offers discussion of regional agricultural origins in and dispersals out of these areas: the Middle East, central Africa, China, New Guinea, Mesoamerica and the northern Andes. CLICK HERE

    AGRICULTURE: HISTORY AND OVERVIEW
The beginnings of agriculture predate written history. No one knows when the first crop was cultivated, but at some time in the distant past humans discovered that seeds from certain wild grasses could be collected and planted in land that could be controlled and the grasses later gathered for food. Most scholars believe this occurred at about the same time in both the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, some eight thousand to ten thousand years ago. Early Agriculture The earliest attempts to grow crops were primarily to supplement the food supply provided by hunting and gathering. However, as the ability to produce crops increased, people began to domesticate plants and animals, and their reliance on hunting and gathering decreased, allowing the development of permanent settlements in which humans could live. As far back as six thousand years ago, agriculture was firmly established in Asia , India, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Mexico, Central America , and South America The earliest agricultural centers were located near large rivers that helped maintain soil fertility by the deposition of new topsoil with each annual flooding cycle.
