More than 70 percent of poor people rely on agriculture for their income. But for the world’s estimated 400 million small-scale farmers, farming can also be a tremendously precarious way of life. From helping farmers survive changes in weather to ensuring that they receive a fair price for their crops, Oxfam helps make sure family farmers around the world can earn a decent living. Oxfam partners with small-scale farmers around the world to confront the challenges that keep them from earning a decent living.

    Fix and Revitalize Foreign Aid
President Obama has unveiled a new Global Development Strategy to help poor people lift themselves out of poverty. But unless the House reforms the 50-year-old laws governing US foreign aid, key parts of the strategy could be in jeopardy every four years as the policy comes up for renewal. We must rebuild America's foreign aid system to fight poverty more effectively – while ensuring that some of the most important elements of the new Global Development Strategy aren't subject to the whims of politics.
    Support Global Food Security
Over 925 million people – almost one in every six – are suffering from hunger, a problem that will only get worse as climate change makes weather less predictable and farming more difficult. Women and children are often the hardest hit by hunger. In 2009 alone, hunger and malnutrition contributed to the death of more than 3 million children. No one should have to go hungry, and we have the tools to improve global food security.

What is Sustainable Agriculture?
A griculture has changed dramatically, especially since the end of World War II. Food and fiber productivity soared due to new technologies, mechanization, increased chemical use, specialization and government policies that favored maximizing production. These changes allowed fewer farmers with reduced labor demands to produce the majority of the food and fiber in the U.S. Although these changes have had many positive effects and reduced many risks in farming, there have also been significant costs.Prominent among these are topsoil depletion, groundwater contamination, the decline of family farms, continued neglect of the living and working conditions for farm laborers, increasing costs of production, and the disintegration of economic and social conditions in rural communities. A growing movement has emerged during the past two decades to question the role of the agricultural establishment in promoting practices that contribute to these social problems. Today this movement for sustainable agriculture is garnering increasing support and acceptance within mainstream agriculture. Not only does sustainable agriculture address many environmental and social concerns, but it offers innovative and economically viable opportunities for growers, laborers, consumers, policymakers and many others in the entire food system.

Tiers of the Food System: A New Way of Thinking About Local and Regional Food
From farmers’ markets to supermarkets, there is a spectrum of relationships between consumers and the businesses that grow, process, distribute and market their food. Small-scale, local food production is often contrasted with the anonymity of global, industrial food production, resulting in a black and white portrayal of local and global food systems. In reality, the food system is far more complex than local versus global and artisanal versus industrial.

I traveled to Thailand hoping for an enriching experience. What I found exceeded my wildest expectations." Chris Cox, International Health Program, Thailand Integrated Service-Learning Program . The Sustainable Agriculture Service-Learning Program starts off with a week-long orientation and technical training followed by participation in a variety of community training workshops to promote food security. The workshops conducted during your program will depend on the needs of the community at that time. Tanzania During your first week in Tanzania , you and your fellow volunteers will attend cultural orientation conducted at the GSC office, which includes Swahili lessons, information on safety, culture, and the history of Tanzania Sustainable Agriculture Program participants along with GSC staff involved with rural trainings will be accommodated in tents at base camps around the villages trained for each given workweek, returning to the homestay at the end of the week. Volunteers are part of a team including GSC staff delivering a package of food security innovations for rural village trainings. Whether you are an experienced camper or a novice, worry not! GSC provides all needed equipment including sleeping bags, mats, and tents. You will stay in a secure area, usually in the compound of the village leader, and a local mama will prepare meals for the group. Volunteers find staying in the village culturally rewarding as they have time to visit with community members and truly experience rural Tanzanian life.

http://quod.lib.umich.edu/n/nal/
The Organic Agriculture Information Access is an electronic collection of historic United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) publications related to organic agriculture. In this collection, there are almost 200 documents published before 1942 (before synthetic chemicals became widely used) that contain state-of-the-art information and data that is still very pertinent for today's agriculture. Access to this data is intended to provide growers with new ideas on crop production without chemicals, as well as help researchers conserve scarce resources by avoiding unintended duplication. This collection is provided by the Alternative Farming Systems Information Center (AFSIC) , a part of the National Agricultural Library (NAL) , with funding from the USDA National Organic Program and Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program. This effort is part of the AFSIC "Organic Roots" project. Search the collection:
