Agriculture (a term which encompasses farming and ranching) is the process of producing food, feed, fiber, fuel and other goods by the systematic raising of plants and animals. Agri is from Latin ager, meaning "a field", and culture is from Latin cultura, meaning "cultivation" in the strict sense of tillage of the soil. A literal reading of the English word yields: tillage of the soil of a field. In modern usage, the word agriculture covers all activities essential to food/feed/fiber production, including all techniques for raising and processing livestock. Agriculture is also short for the study of the practice of agriculture—more formally known as agricultural science. The history of agriculture is a major element of human history, agricultural progress has been a crucial factor in worldwide social change, including the specialization of human activity: when farmers became capable of producing food beyond the needs of their own families, others in the tribe or nation or empire were freed to devote themselves to something other than food acquisition.

Philsurin Releases Three New Sugarcane Varieties
The Philippine Sugar Research Institute breeding station located at Victorias City Negros Occidental, announced the release of three outstanding sugarcane varieties from the year 2000 series. Out of the 114,000 seedlings produced from 790 crosses of 250 parent varieties, three varieties proved outstanding: PSR 00-34, PSR 00-343, and PSR 00-161. These three varieties have undergone eight years of intensive evaluation and selection process in 15 locations throughout the country. Yield data were based on 27 plant and 11 ratoon trials in at least 13 sites. PSR 00-34 is a cross between VMC 84-194 and Phil 89-43. Phil 89-43 is a commercial cane noted for disease resistance and also high tonnage due to its big stalks and good germination, while VMC 84-194 is a variety with good rendement and disease resistance. Popularity: 1% Sugar Sugarcane Other Crops Leave a comment ... Noche Buena feast. The problem with the traditional Noche Buena dinners is that they are so rich. While it is true that hams, lechon (pork or chicken) and embutido are truly yummy and mouthwatering, they are also full of fat and bad cholesterol, which to the hypertensive and diabetic lot, spell danger. For people with dietary problems or even for the plain health conscious, we recommend this healthy Ensalada de noche Buena to start their delicious Christmas meal. Ensalada comes from the Latin word salata which means salty. Of Spanish origin, ensalada is an appetizer which is actually a medley of vegetables, fruits, nuts, croutons, fish, cheese, etc. served with salad dressing. Through the years, culinary experts have created various versions of ensalada using different ingredients and dressings. We recommend this healthy salad to perk up your traditional Christmas family dinner.

AGRICULTURE
Spain Table of Contents Compared with other West European countries, the proportion of land devoted to agricultural purposes is low. In the 1980s, about 5 million hectares were devoted to permanent crops: orchards, olive groves, and vineyards. Another 5 million lay fallow each year because of inadequate rainfall. Permanent meadows and pastureland occupied 13.9 million hectares. Forests and scrub woodland accounted for 11.9 million hectares, and the balance was wasteland or was taken up by populated and industrial areas. The primary forms of property holding in Spain have been large estates (latifundios) and tiny land plots ( minifundios ). In large measure, this was still true in the 1980s. The agrarian census of 1982 found that 50.9 percent of the country's farmland was held in properties of 200 or more hectares, although farms of this size made up only 1.1 percent of the country's 2.3 million farms. At the other end of the scale, the census showed that 61.8 percent of Spain's farms had fewer than 5 hectares of land. These farms accounted for 5.2 percent of the country's farmland. Furthermore, just under 25-percent of all farms consisted of less than 1 hectare of land, and they accounted for 0.5 percent of all farmland. Minifundios were particularly numerous in the north and the northwest. Latifundios were mainly concentrated in the south, in Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Valencia, and Andalusia (Spanish, Andalucia).

AGRICULTURE
Thailand Table of Contents Much of the impressive economic growth recorded by Thailand in the 1970s and the early 1980s was owed to the steady expansion of the agricultural sector. This sector provided adequate food for the rapidly growing population and produced substantial surpluses of some commodities for export. Agriculturecrops, livestock, forestry, and fisheries employed about three-quarters of the labor force, and it was estimated that some four-fifths of the total population was dependent on the sector for its livelihood. During the mid-1980s, agriculture accounted for an average of about 25 percent of GDP, and agricultural commodities accounted annually for over 60 percent of the value of all exports. The type of agriculture engaged inwhether cash crop, subsistence, or a combination thereofvaried from region to region and within regions. In the central plain, there were farmers whose sole activity was the raising of such cash crops as maize, sugarcane, vegetables, and fruit. In the rice bowl region of the central plain, farmers grew rice for sale as a main crop. Elsewhere, rice was raised basically for subsistence purposes, but many farmers also cultivated secondary crops for the market. In areas without developed access roads and services, such as parts of the upper Northeast, participation in the market economy was limited. Farmers in these areas practiced subsistence cultivation, selling only an occasional surplus locally.
