Agriculture
From LoveToKnow 1911
AGRICULTURE (from Lat. ager, field, and colere, to cultivate), the science, art and industry of utilizing the soil so as to produce the means of human subsistence, embracing in its widest sense the rearing of live-stock as well as the raising of crops. The history of agriculture is the history of man in his most primitive, and most permanent aspect. Hence the nations of antiquity ascribed to it a divine origin; Brahma in Hindustan, Isis in Egypt Demeter in Greece , and Ceres in Italy , were its founders. The simplest form of agriculture is that in which crops are raised from one patch of ground till it is exhausted, when it is allowed to go wild and abandoned for another. This " extensive " husbandry is found in combination with a nomadic or seminomadic and pastoral organization, such as that of the German tribes described by Caesar and Tacitus (see especially Germania, 26). The discovery of the uses of the bare fallow and of manure, by making it possible to raise crops from the same area for an indefinite period, marks a stage of progress. This " intensive " culture in a more or less developed form was practised by the great nations of antiquity, and little decided advance was made till after the middle ages . The introduction of new plants, which made it possible to dispense with the bare fallow, and still later the application to husbandry of scientific discoveries as to soils, plant constituents and

Welcome and thank you for visiting the homepage of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. Agriculture is at the heart of so many issues that impact our lives each day – from producing food and fiber and the fuel that supplies our vehicles to the conservation of our natural resources and the economic growth and jobs in rural areas. The responsibilities and goals of the Senate Agriculture Committee are as diverse as the needs of American agriculture. The policies developed by this committee will support efforts to move our country forward, help rural communities grow and succeed and help boost the rural economy to preserve opportunities for the next generation for states like Arkansas. Jump to: navigation search Previous (Agricultural technology) Next (Agrippa I) Farmlands in Hebei province, China. Agriculture (a term which encompasses farming ) is the process of producing food, feed, fiber fuel , and other goods by the systematic raising of plants and animals . Agricultural products have been a main stay of the human diet for many thousands of years. The earliest known farming has been found to have derived from Southeast Asia almost 10,000 years ago. Prior to the development of plant cultivation, human beings were hunters and gatherers . The knowledge and skill of learning to care for the soil and growth of plants advanced the development of human society , allowing clans and tribes to stay in one location generation after generation. Because of agriculture, cities as well as trade relations between different regions and groups of people developed, further enabling the advancement of human societies and cultures . Agriculture has been an important aspect of economics throughout the centuries prior to and after the Industrial Revolution . Sustainable development of world food supplies impact the future of globalization and the long-term survival of the species , so care must be taken to ensure that agricultural methods remain in harmony with the environment.

The end.
Defunct agricultural practices known as conventional chemical farming are destroying the world. Much of the damage is done. Organic agriculture, or permaculture, is farming's only possible alternative food production, and industrial hemp production is an essential cash rotation crop that replenishes the soil and reverses erosion damage.

T ake this quick test: if your soil has worms, which aerate the soil while they fertilize it, your soil is healthy. If it doesn't, your soil is like most soil: dead. Poisoned, most likely.
Modern agriculture has given the once proud abbreviation agri a bad name. Chemical agricultural practices, using petroleum to supply essential plant nutrients, has become conventional farming, while organic farmers and organic farms that practice permaculture and alternative food production, are still considered outside the mainstream. Chemical agricultural parctices release nitrous oxide into the atmosphere and cause erosion, contributing to the geometric progression of global warming and climate change. This further damages our food supply.
