Farmland numbers decline: Fewer farms exist in the U.S., as a result of consolidation and a movement of land to non-agricultural uses, USDA said Friday. U.S. farm operators are estimated at 2.08 million at the start of this year, a decline of 0.6 percent from a year ago. Some 930.9 million acres were in farmland, down 1.5 million from one year earlier. The decline in farm numbers pushed the average farm size up to 449 acres, an increase of three acres from the previous year. Farms with sales less than $100,000 - which account for about 83% of all U.S. farms - dropped 1.2% due to consolidation and rising incomes that moved some farmers and ranchers into the next sales bracket without adding land or boosting their businesses. Operations with sales of $100,000 or more rose 2.2%

AgriCultures Network
Success stories from small-scale farmers are often hard to find. They do exist, and there is much to be learnt from them. They can help improve productivity, generate income, and empower farmers.
The AgriCultures Network produces magazines and other media to build knowledge and exchange information, and stimulates debate and concerted action among key stakeholders. In this way we promote sustainable family farming, stressing its capacity to address structural global problems such as hunger, poverty, environmental degradation and climate change.

    The Beginning Farmer
The Journey of a Beginning Farmer :: As a child I spent most of my life in town living with my mom, but whenever I visited my Dad and his side of the family it was on the farm. From my earliest memories I have always wanted to be a farmer (except when I wanted to be a cowboy). Now, I am trying to fulfill that dream. This will be a journal of that journey :: my research, my joys, my frustrations, and all of the things that go along with the beginning farmer.

NHF Podcast ... "Death of a Farm"
Thank you to all of you have taken time to comment and e-mail over the past couple weeks. I am taking time to filter everything through my mind, but want to say that I'm thankful for the encouragement and ideas. Hopefully I'll find the time to respond and share some of the things that are processing through my head soon! In the meantime though here is something interesting ...
Many of you may already know that Nature's Harmony Farm has stopped doing their blog, but have begun doing podcasts. I have been listening to them lately when there is time while I'm driving around and they have been pretty interesting. But, for me their latest podcast was very interesting ... especially in light of my latest post and thoughts about the farm. You can find it on iTunes or download it from

The DG system provides structure to a traditional, informally-trained vocation. The system improves the efficiency of extension programs by delivering targeted content to a wider audience and enabling farmers to better manage their farming operations with reduced field support.
The features of the Digital Green system include: Digital Green borrows concepts and experiences from the Digital StudyHall (DSH) system. Launched in September 2006 by Microsoft Research India's Technology for Emerging Markets team, a live deployment of a prototype is currently in development with the GREEN Foundation in villages near the Karanataka and Tamil Nadu-state borders in India.
We are actively compiling a repository of videos that includes testimonials of progressive farmers, field demonstrations led by agriscientists, interactions amongst farmers, and market-based opportunities. The library currently contains over 150 locally-produced videos in the Kannada language. These recordings are minimally-edited prior to screenings, which are shown to individuals on laptops, small groups using shared TV and DVD players, and communities through the village cable network. Unlike attempts to use traditional mass media to broadcast agricultural information, DG is local and relevant. Farmers are motivated to adopt a new practice when they see a fellow villager, living in similar circumstances, experience its benefits.

    About
The Russell Ranch Sustainable Agriculture Facility conducts long-term research assessing the sustainability of different cropping systems by comparing system outputs and soil quality indicators. Russell Ranch is a 1500 acre tract near the UC Davis campus, which hosts the Long Term Research on Agricultural Systems (LTRAS) and Sustainable Agriculture Farming Systems (SAFS) projects. The Russell Ranch Sustainable Agriculture Facility is a unit of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute (ASI) The primary objective of the LTRAS and SAFS projects is to understand the relationships between sustainability and external inputs. Sustainability is assessed from long-term trends in yield, profitability, efficiency in use of limited resources (such as water or energy), and environmental impact, such as leaching of nitrate or pesticides. The Russell Ranch site is primarily a research facility and also supports UC Davis' extension and teaching missions by hosting field days, class field trips, undergraduate interns and graduate student research.
