HIV May Be Transmitted via Pre-Chewed Food
By MedNews
Category: AIDS/HIV Leave a Comment Researchers have uncovered the first cases in which HIV almost certainly was transmitted from mothers or other caregivers to children through pre-chewed food. The source of HIV in the pre-chewed food was most likely the infected blood in the saliva of the people who pre-chewed the food before giving it to the children. The researchers said their findings suggest that HIV-infected mothers or other caregivers should be warned against giving infants pre-chewed food and directed toward safer feeding options. WHAT IS AIDS/HIV? The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV is transmitted through direct contact with a bodily fluid infected with HIV. This transmission can come in the form of sex, blood transfusions, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or childbirth. AIDS is a collection of infections resulting from damage to the immune system caused by HIV. HIV primarily infects vital cells in the human immune system. HIV infection leads to low levels of CD4+ T cells. When CD4+ T cell numbers decline below a critical level, the body is left more susceptible to infections. If untreated, eventually most HIV-infected individuals develop AIDS. The late stages of the condition leave individuals prone to infections and even tumors. Some treatments exist, but, as of yet, there are no cures. WAYS IN WHICH YOU MIGHT BE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST FOR HAVING AIDS/HIV:
      • Your employer does not allow you to miss work for medical appointments Your employer does not allow you to work, for fear that you will infect a co-worker

    What is HIV?
To answer the question what is HIV AIDS, we have to start early in the epidemic. In 1985, scientists discovered the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and with it the question what is aids was answered. HIV is a virus that is transmitted from person to person through the exchange of body fluids such as blood, semen, breast milk and vaginal secretions. Sexual contact is the most common way to spread HIV AIDS, but it can also be transmitted by sharing needles when injecting drugs, or during childbirth and breastfeeding. As HIV AIDS reproduces, it damages the body's immune system and the body becomes susceptible to illness and infection. There is no known cure for HIV infection.

Home AIDS/HIV AIDS/HIV Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the virus that is responsible for causing acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The virus destroys or impairs cells of the immune system and progressively destroys the body's ability to fight infections and certain cancers. In adults and adolescents , HIV is most commonly spread by sexual contact with an infected partner. In children under the age of 13 in the United States, nearly all HIV infections are from vertical transmission, which means the virus is passed to the child when they are in their mother's womb or as they pass through the birth canal. However, not every child born to an HIV-infected mother will acquire the virus. The virus has also been detected in breast milk. Before 1985, a small group of children were infected with the virus by contaminated blood products, but routine screening of blood products for HIV began in 1985. HIV Statistics
    • There are between 6,000 to 7,000 children who are born to HIV-infected mothers each year in the United States.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "the number of AIDS-related deaths in the US decreased for the first time in 1996. A total of 573,000 AIDS cases was reported from 1981 through 1996, including 68, 473 in 1996," (Trends, 1997: 165). In tandem with the AIDS virus is HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) which the person who develops AIDS first becomes infected with. The mode of transmission for AIDS is through the exchange of bodily fluids (blood and semen). The most at-risk groups for contracting HIV are heterosexuals and homosexuals who practice unsafe sex with numerous partners, and intravenous drug users who share needles. To date there have only been 102 documented cases of HIV being contracted through occupational exposure (Folks and Butera, 1996: 4). AIDS is a disease that develops in the usual pathway: "A person infected with HIV gradually loses immune function along with certain immune cells, called CD4 T-lymphocytes or CD4 T-cells , causing the infected person to become vulnerable to pneumonia, fungus infections, and other common ailments. With the loss of immune function, a clinical syndrome (a group of various illnesses that together characterize a disease) develops over time and eventually results in death due to opportunistic infections or cancers," (Folks, et.al, 1996: 1). The normal manner of becoming infected is through sexual activity with an infected pa

    What is AIDS?
AIDS stands for: A cquired I mmune D eficiency S yndrome AIDS is a medical condition. A person is diagnosed with AIDS when their immune system is too weak to fight off infections. Since AIDS was first identified in the early 1980s, an unprecedented number of people have been affected by the global AIDS epidemic . Today, there are an estimated 33.4 million people living with HIV and AIDS and each year around two million people die from AIDS related illnesses.
    What causes AIDS?
AIDS is caused by HIV HIV is a virus that gradually attacks immune system cells. As HIV progressively damages these cells, the body becomes more vulnerable to infections, which it will have difficulty in fighting off. It is at the point of very advanced HIV infection that a person is said to have AIDS. It can be years before HIV has damaged the immune system enough for AIDS to develop.
