After his graduation from Auburn, Nichols decided to pursue a career in agriculture. He became an assistant county farm agent in Autauga County. His principal duties consisted of advising area farmers and counseling 4H clubs. However, World War II caused Nichols to change his career plans. Nichols served with distinction as an officer during World War II. He received his military training at Auburn as a member of the university's ROTC program. Entering the Army in 1942, Nichols spent five years in Europe. His military career began with his assignment to the 8th Infantry Division as a Second Lieutenant. He served as that unit's artillery officer. In June 1944, he participated in the Allied invasion of France. On November 3, 1944, Nichols was critically wounded at the Battle of Hurt Forest, and as a result did not see any further action for the remainder of the war. Awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his military activities during World War II, Nichols retired from the Army at the grade of Captain in 1947.
