// zoneId = textEntitlement document.write(''); Alabama, which joined the Union as the 22nd state in 1819, is located in the southern United States and nicknamed the "Heart of Dixie." The region that became Alabama was occupied by North American Indians as early as some 10,000 years ago. Europeans reached the area in the 16th century. During the first half of the 19th century, cotton and slave labor were central to Alabama's economy. The state played a key role in the American Civil War; its capital, Montgomery, was the Confederacy's first capital. Following the war, segregation of blacks and whites prevailed throughout much of the South. In the mid-20th century, Alabama was at the center of the American Civil Rights Movement and home to such pivotal events as the Montgomery Bus Boycott. In the early 21st century, the state's economy was fueled in part by jobs in aerospace, agriculture, auto production and the service sector. More to Explore

In early newspaper accounts of Alabama football, the team was simply listed as the "varsity" or the "Crimson White" after the school colors.
The first nickname to become popular and used by headline writers was the "Thin Red Line." The nickname was used until 1906.
The name "Crimson Tide" is supposed to have first been used by Hugh Roberts, former sports editor of the Birmingham Age-Herald. He used "Crimson Tide" in describing an Alabama-Auburn game played in Birmingham in 1907, the last football contest between the two schools until 1948 when the series was resumed. The game was played in a sea of mud and Auburn was a heavy favorite to win.
But, evidently, the "Thin Red Line" played a great game in the red mud and held Auburn to a 6-6 tie, thus gaining the name "Crimson Tide." Zipp Newman, former sports editor of the Birmingham News, probably popularized the name more than any other writer.

Known as the Heart of Dixie, Alabama became the 22nd state in 1819. The name Alabama is derived from an Indian word meaning "thicket clearers." Alabama has been at the center of many American battlesbetween white settlers and Native Americans, and between the North and South in the Civil War. The state also is home to the first of three Space Camps in the United States. The capital is Montgomery, and state flower is the camellia.
  • Few people of extensive wealth moved into the Alabama region during the period of early settlement. Only the man who needed to better his fortune had an inducement to make the necessary sacrifice. More. The log house, so typical of a frontier community, was not an ephemeral thing. It remained the standard of domestic architecture in the more isolated sections and was sometimes adhered to from inertia or sentimental reasons by men who could easily have afforded more modern quarters. More.
  • The press came into Alabama with the settlers and exercised a strong influence during the formative period of the State. The little four-page sheets which came out once or twice a week were largely taken up with advertisements and notices. More.

    Alabama History
Before Europeans began coming to the area that would be later named Alabama , the land was inhabited by the Creek, Choctaw, Cherokee, Alabamas and Chickasaw Indian nations. Then, in 1519, Alvarez de Pinada of Spain sailed in the Mobile Bay. However, it was not until 1540 that De Soto and his troops entered the interior of Alabama. They eventually enslaved the Indians and then defeated them, taking away their land and burning their villages. However, it was not until 1702 that the French founded Fort Louis on the banks of the Mobile River. For several years, there was conflict between Europe and the land areas that included Alabama. Then in 1783, the northern region of Alabama became part of America, and in 1795, the US acquired all but the gulf region. After a number of battles with Spain, as well as the Indians, the US ultimately prevailed and, in 1814, attained the rest of the land. In 1819, Alabama became the twenty-second state in the Union. Alabama has been the site of historic battles, scientific and technological advances, civil rights victories and other ground breaking events. It is the birthplaces of baseball greats Hank Aaron and Willie Mays, musician Nat King Cole, Country western singer Hank Williams, civil rights activist Rosa Parks, and historic figures like Helen Keller and Booker T. Washington. Alabama is home to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, the first White House of the Confederacy, and many other national historic sites and landmarks.
